New Mexicans made their voices heard this week.

Across the state, voters showed their support for leaders who understand that strong families, healthy communities, and economic security matter. For those of us working to ensure workers and caregivers have the support they need, this moment brings renewed opportunities to advance conversations about the policies that help New Mexico families thrive.

As the election season continues, we're encouraged by the growing momentum behind policies that strengthen economic security and support caregivers across our state.

We look forward to continuing the work of building a New Mexico where every family has the support they need during life's most important moments.

For many parents, the postpartum period is one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re naming something simple but powerful: paid family medical leave gives parents the time they need to heal and build strong, healthy families.

When parents are supported, entire communities are made stronger.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the mothers and caregivers who carry so much often quietly, often without enough support, but always with love and strength. You are the heart of your families and communities, holding it all together in ways that deserve to be seen, valued, and supported.

Paid Family and Medical Leave is more than a policy; it is a promise that families deserve time and dignity in life’s most sacred moments. It means a mother can welcome her newborn without fear of losing stability. It means caregivers can show up for loved ones with presence instead of sacrifice. It means women and girls+ are not forced to choose between their health, their families, and their livelihoods.

On May 5th, we recognize Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Relatives Awareness Day.

Indigenous women and relatives face disproportionate violence, and too many cases go uninvestigated and unresolved. This is a crisis rooted in systemic gaps in protection and justice.

We stand with Native communities demanding accountability, stronger protections, and real change.

Today, we wear red to honor the missing, remember those lost, and call for justice.

As May begins, we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month as a time to uplift voices, challenge stigma, and reaffirm our commitment to the well-being of our communities.

Mental health is deeply connected to safety, dignity, and access to care. Every effort to open dialogue, share resources, and support one another helps build a more compassionate and equitable community.
This month is not only about awareness, but about action, strengthening connections, expanding understanding, and ensuring that mental health is prioritized in every space we serve.

Together, through advocacy, education, and everyday acts of care, we can help create systems and communities where healing is supported, and no one is left to face their struggles alone.

At the Southwest Women’s Law Center, we provide free legal representation, advice, and/or brief services to survivors of domestic violence across New Mexico. We help with things like safety planning, protection orders, custody, and child support in Tribal Courts throughout New Mexico. Legal education and advice can change lives and lead to greater safety, stability, and long-term independence for survivors and their families. We are grateful to be able to provide this service and remain committed to ensuring that survivors have access to the legal support they need to make informed decisions, protect themselves and their children, and move forward on their own terms.

May Day is about workers’ rights and about the people who show up every day to keep New Mexico running.
At the Southwest Women’s Law Center, we’re fighting for paid family and medical leave, fair wages, and childcare that actually works for New Mexico families—because when women are supported, our whole community is stronger.

Donate to help us keep the fight going for paid leave, fair wages, and childcare that works for New Mexico families.

Not all superheroes wear capes.
Some are the backbone of their families. Caregivers, parents, and loved ones show up every single day to care for others, often at the expense of their own time, income, and well-being.
allows us to recognize the real heroes behind paid family and medical leave policies. The moms, caregivers, and family members who hold everything together during life’s most critical moments.
When a child is sick, a parent is recovering, or a loved one needs care, these superheroes don’t clock out. They step in.
Paid family and medical leave isn’t just a policy, it’s a lifeline. It allows caregivers to be present without risking their financial stability. It’s how we support the people who support everyone else.
At Southwest Women’s Law Center, we believe our laws should reflect this reality—valuing care, protecting families, and ensuring no one has to choose between a paycheck and their loved ones.
Today, we honor the superheroes at home.
