The Albuquerque Downtown Growers' Market welcomes about 90,000 visitors annually and helps generate millions of dollars in local economic activity. On September 14, 1874, members of the white supremacist militia, White League, attacked New Orleans and temporarily overthrew Louisiana’s elected, integrated government. The violence was aimed at undoing Reconstruction and restoring white control after Black voters had helped elect leaders who supported civil rights. Housing justice depends on a democracy that actually functions. When force is used to overturn political power, communities lose control over the protections that decide who gets to remain secure where they live. On September 8, 1910, the Texas House of Representatives approved a resolution urging Congress to work toward repealing the Fourteenth Amendment, which granted citizenship to Black people born in the United States. This was part of a long effort to weaken Black political power after Reconstruction. We share this history because it echoes current events. Voting rights shape housing rights, and when people are pushed out of political life, they lose power over decisions that affect land and public investment, as well as the enforcement of fair housing protections.
