Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship The Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship is offered annually to students graduating from Volcano Vista High School (VVHS).

The scholarship commemorates the teaching career of Douglas Goodfellow, who taught at VVHS from 2008 to 2022. Despite a rough childhood, and multiple attempts at completing his college education, Doug persevered and completed his bachelor’s and master's degrees in his 40's. He embodied resilience, persistence, and a lifelong love of learning. In honor of his storied educational journey, there is n

o minimum GPA requirement to apply to the Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship. Students who may have struggled academically are especially encouraged to apply.

🎉 The 2026 Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship application is officially OPEN! 🎉

We’re so excited to invite graduating seniors from Volcano Vista High School to apply for this special award honoring Doug Goodfellow—a teacher who embodied resilience, persistence, and a lifelong love of learning.

💛 This scholarship is especially for students who may have struggled academically but kept going. In that spirit, applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or below.

✨ Award: One $4,000 scholarship
✨ Who can apply:
• Graduating VVHS seniors
• Planning to attend college, trade school, community college, or a service program (like AmeriCorps or City Year)
• GPA of 3.5 or lower

✨ Application includes:
• Two short essays (500 words or less)
• An unofficial transcript

⏰ Deadline: April 30 at 11:59 PM MST

⚠️ Important: Do NOT wait until the last minute! You’ll need to request your transcript in advance, and late applications will not be accepted.

Applications are reviewed by Doug’s family, friends, and former colleagues, and the recipient will be honored at the VVHS honors assembly.

We’re proud to share that we now have a fiscal sponsor: the Partners in Education Foundation for the Santa Fe Public Schools. Through this partnership, they’ll help us disburse scholarship awards and accept tax-deductible donations, making it easier to support students and grow the scholarship’s impact.

The Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship honors Doug’s legacy by supporting graduating seniors as they pursue education, service, and their next steps after high school — and this partnership helps ensure that work continues for years to come.

Congrats to the 2025 recipient of the Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship (DGMS), Julia Gambino! Julia plans to attend the University of New Mexico this fall and major in secondary education. She is pictured here with Ana Marie Goodfellow, her parent, and one of Julia’s favorite teachers from Volcano Vista High School, Ms. Coonrod.

Here are some words of wisdom from Julia’s application: ‘I’ve noticed it’s easier to love others when you’ve got a goal you’re working towards, because while love needs no purpose, a sense of progress and pride helps you be a better person. By setting and achieving small goals, I’ve come to find that happiness often comes from the journey of growth and the feeling of crossing the finish line.’

DGMS is delighted to provide Julia with $3,000 to help her prepare for her transition to college. Thank you to our generous donors who help make this gift possible and for continuing Doug’s legacy.

Happy New Year, everyone! We're excited to announce that the 2025 Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship application will open on February 1st.

As always, there will be no minimum GPA, and all graduating seniors at Volcano Vista High School are encouraged to apply.

Introducing the 2024 Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship Recipient, Sophia Jeffres! Sophia will attend Eastern New Mexico University this fall (a second-generation greyhound, as her mother also attended ENMU!)

Sophia had Mr. Goodfellow for Driver's Ed. She reflected on this in her application, 'Going to Drivers Ed always made my day because Mr. Goodfellow was always so excited and happy to be there. If there was one thing I took from his story it is that in order to be happy, truly happy, you have to be the one to make yourself happy. If you don’t like how your life is, then you have to be the one to make that change and make a difference in your own life and I believe that Mr. Goodfellow had huge impacts on everyone’s life he was in.'

We certainly agree with her. Congrats, Sophia, and good luck at ENMU!

This year's DGMS was presented by Mr. Goodfellow's colleague, Lisa Valdez. Before we tell you about this year's wonderful recipient, we'd like to thank Ms. Valdez for presenting the award and her beautiful speech.

'I was lucky enough to work with Doug Goodfellow for 14 years here at Volcano Vista before his passing in April of 2022; he was my very treasured colleague in the English department. You, dear graduates of the Class of 2024, are incredibly special to me…and to him. Please raise your hand if you had Mr. G during your freshman year, or in remote learning during your sophomore year - either as a Driver’s Ed student or in his Advisory class. You few, will be among the last to have known his impact on a one-to-one, personal level; you are among the last. As you graduate, please know how important it is that you take his memory with you. However, through this amazing scholarship award, Mr. Goodfellow will continue to touch the lives of young people well into the future, even now that he is gone. Tonight’s recipient is the lucky one to carry this torch into the future.'
