The Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship is offered annually to students graduating from Volcano Vista High School (VVHS).

The scholarship commemorates the teaching career of Douglas Goodfellow, who taught at VVHS from 2008 to 2022. Despite a rough childhood, and multiple attempts at completing his college education, Doug persevered and completed his bachelor’s and master's degrees in his 40's. He embodied resilience, persistence, and a lifelong love of learning. In honor of his storied educational journey, there is no minimum GPA requirement to apply to the Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship. Students who may have struggled academically are especially encouraged to apply.

Congratulations to the 2026 Recipient of the Douglas Goodfellow Memorial Scholarship: Quintress Harris!

Quintress will receive $1,000 a year for the next four years of her educational journey for a total of $4,000. She plans to attend CNM and study culinary arts.

In her application, she chose to read Doug's story from the DGMS website, 'What is your idea of perfect happiness?' In response she wrote, "[The story] showed me that happiness isn’t just about having success. It’s more about becoming a better person for your loved ones. It takes honesty and effort to admit when you’re wrong. This story makes me think about my future. I know that my future isn’t gonna be easy but it's okay. When I go to college or start working after high school. I know there will be struggles, obstacles. His story helped me understand that those moments are not mistakes. They are part of the learning opportunity for me to achieve something meaningful."

Thank you to our donors, the application review panel and the administration at Volcano Vista High School for making this award possible!
