After the reproductive health class and distribution of our washable sanitary pad kits in a small village in Mustang, Nepal, the women and girls meet with me. As in many other villages, the women and girls tie a silk scarf around my neck. The scarves signify welcome, honor, and appreciation. What a meaningful ceremony it was for me. It never got old.

Since I (Director, Christine Chilufya Glidden) does not speak Nepali, she was lucky to be joined by Karma and Yangin who were born and raised in Mustang, Nepal. Mustang is a very remote district located in the Annapurna range of the Himalayas bordering Tibet. To teach our reproductive health class, Karma and Yangjin created a word for ‘fallopian tube’ since none existed. Here you see the class and the explanation of their new washable sanitary pad ‘kits’. Some girls are learning about their sexual organs, menstruation, and in*******se for the first time. This prepared the for martial intimacy. Christine is shown in her orange parka.

Tea plantations line the hillsides, a monkey and I watch the waterfalls, and a video of the majestic falls near Uva Sri Lanka. I had no idea of the vast natural beauty Sri Lanka offers up.

On the right is Krishnaa Patil, the youngest Indian climber to ever summit Mount Everest. And what a presence she is.

Krishnaa was 19 at the time and is now 28. Younger Indian climbers have now eclipsed that record.
What sets Krishnaa apart besides her age is her background. Especially at the time, climbers from India who summited Mount Everest came from moneyed families and had a elite educational backgrounds. Their families were able to buy the best equipment and hire the best coaches and guides.
Krishnaa on the other hand, came from a middle-class, single mother family with limited resources.
Her mother, Ranjana, however, made many sacrifices to lay a path for her daughter to become a physically effective and mindfully adept athlete capable of enjoying the training of goalless workouts.
Ranjana fed her daughter organic vegan meals from an early age and set her on a mental discipline of regular exercise and movement. Not a day was missed and Krishnaa seemed to thrive in these disciplines. this went on for well over a decade until Krishnaa decided one day that her real desire would be to climb Mount Everest.
Without a plan in mind as to how this whole thing would be financed, the mother-daughter team moved forward with training and a belief in a reward in the trust of uncertainty and risk.
They met a man who seemed captivated by their efforts and invested just enough money to get Krishnaa ready for the climb. The day came to start off for Basecamp. And now it seemed that the public started to take notice.
I don’t have a lot of details on the climb itself. But I do know that once Krishnaa reached the summit, she became a national hero.
Suddenly people realized that you didn’t have to be rich and you didn’t have to be well educated to achieve a goal if that was truly what you want. This country of India had a moneyed class and then there was everybody else. Krishnaa represented the everybody else. She was written up in all the national newspapers and met many elected leaders and well-known celebrities.
From there, she found sponsorship to climb the other six highest peaks in the world in one year. This has been attempted by few, and accomplished by even fewer.
She claimed five more of the Seven Summits leaving just Mount McKinley in Alaska. With little time left within the year time frame, she set off for Alaska.

I do not have a direct description of what happened at Mount McKinley. This is only based on what I heard through others.

Krishnaa, her guide, and her small climb group headed up the mountain. When they were within a short distance of the summit, her guide instructed her to head down the mountain. Krishna did not understand. Why was he saying this? He gave no reason, but he made the command once again. She questioned him again and again. But Krishnaa followed the rules of the mountain and headed down through tears of frustration and despair. Again, these are my words based only on what I heard from others.
This ended what could’ve been a world record as youngest climber. We ask now why this guide would do this. Was he sexist? Was he resentful of her age? Her nationality? Her ability? Was he jealous? All of the above? On that day, Krishna was healthy, capable, and ready to make the last short leg of what could’ve been a monumental climb.

These days, Krishna is a happy go lucky, full of energy, and ready for anything woman of the world. People from all backgrounds are attracted to her vibrancy. Myself included in a big way!
I stayed with Ranjana and Krishna at their Airbnb in Mumbai for a few days. Krishnaa was here, there and everywhere, so in particular, I got to know Ranjana very well. She is the steady state behind the big presence . You might say, the wind beneath Krishnaa’s wings. Which is not to say, Ranjana doesn’t have wings of her own!

I’m grateful to meet these two women who really star in their lives. What a mother Ranjana must have been to see the way forward for her daughter by asking for so much, but never too much. By pushing hard, but never too hard. By loving through a fierce vision of limitless possibility for krishnaa’s future without creating a pressured strictness that creates resentment and limits motivation. It’s a fine line sometimes. Ranjana’s instincts allowed her to play it like music.
What love there is in this. What wonder. What power. A dynamic only a woman can give the world.

Big day for me in sigurya Sri Lanka. I’m off to see the ancient city that sits atop a massive rock. I’ve looked forward to this day since I started my trip four months ago.

And then …….AND THEN take a look at where I’m staying. Keep in mind this is not some luxury resort, but it’s just kind of down to basics and close to life. Just like I like it.

Oh boy. Watching the sun go down over the Indian ocean from Sri Lanka. Fabulous, this meal I had. Fresh fish from the local sea offering crab and several sauces to complement.
No words. It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had for about $11 including a local beer. Grateful for what the ocean brings me, but maybe it brought me too much tonight.
What great chance to feel appreciation for the natural world. What a great chance to feel gratitude for life.
Did I mention the fabulous papaya slices I bought on the street? $.30 for a huge slice accompanied with lime sections and some combination of spices.
I just can’t believe it. Fresh, juicy, delectable, yum. I’m probably going back every day for my next week in Sri Lanka.

The City Palace in Udaipur, India. The luxury, vastness, attention to detail, and the lifestyle the Palace supported overwhelms the imagination. And at night, even more glorious.

My new friend Lalit took me on his scooter through the fruit and vegetable market to his home as a surprise to me. His wife was waiting with hot tea and cookies. Before this, he had only been the driver and advisor, who took me around Udaipur to see City Palace and to find imitation gold jewelry stores.
The imitation jewelry is hard to distinguish between the real thing and is intricately made in the preferred 22carat Indian style. It’s incredibly cheap! And the shopping was fun.And so where the scooter rides through the narrow streets teeming people, groups of kids, vendors, and other scooter passing within inches.

Outside of Mumbai, I encountered this vendor who offers heated nuts and beans for sale as snacks. They’re actually very good. You can see he fills the newspaper come, adds a little oil, squeezes a bit of fresh lemon juice, shakes it up, and serves it. Some vendors add, small cubes Tomato and onion.
It’s a great snack especially for walking around and it’s fun to watch him work.

These are the Ellora Caves several hours drive outside Mumbai. They were hand carved by Buddhist and Hindu monks 1500 years ago. They are massive and number over 30. Each cave is different and has its own purpose. This caves and statues were carved into the side of a rock hill. Some of the rooms are 100 feet deep and 12 feet high. A few were designed with outdoor plazas and others were primarily for prayer and worship. Both work and workmanship are impressive.
Of the thousand or more people visiting the caves today during New Year’s holiday, there were very few Westerners like me. Five or six families and student groups stopped to ask me for selfies. The kids are great. So curious and excited. I know the drill now and have fun with everybody..

Here in Jaipur is the Jantar Mahar, and astronomical observatory and a World heritage Site. It includes the worlds tallest stone, sundial, and it can calculate time within 20 seconds, all done with slabs of stone. The Maharaja Sawal Jai Singh IL researched and experimented with the structures and completed the observatory over 300 years ago. Really interesting and fun to wander around all afternoon.
