The women we serve are amazing as they are, whether they are trafficking victims, homeless, domestic violence survivors, using substances, and/or struggling with mental health issues.

“We did this work before we had any federal funding and we will find a way to continue to do it.” — quote yesterday from Lynn Sanchez, the director of the human trafficking program at Lifelink, after a pause in federal grants threatened her victim aftercare program.
Today, the White House cancelled the grant freeze after it caused widespread confusion. However, the executive order requiring agencies to find out if funded programs promote diversity, equity and inclusion remains in place.
What will mean for programs like LifeLink which help transgender trafficking victims?

Pretty much every single nonprofit we know is freaking out this morning.
Because they all get federal funding.
Except now they don’t.
A freeze on government grants was put into effect today. It includes nonprofits such as our sister organizations who get federal money to help trafficking victims.
The government plans to review all of the programs being funded, but we’re talking hundreds of thousands, so it’s gonna take a while.
AsUR decided when we started never take any government grants. Our reason for this was because they come with too many strings attached, especially the local ones, but we never considered a grant could also be frozen by the U.S. government.

We spent our afternoon doing cold-weather outreach once again in the International District, where we gave out green chile stew made by our friends at A Light In The Night.
But our thoughts right now go to those in southwest New Mexico who are facing heavy snow and temperatures hovering at 18 below zero. Please be safe and stay warm.

We were back out today to do more cold weather outreach.
We also wanted check if the police and solid waste workers followed up on their threat to sweep an encampment that had cropped up on the very edge of a residential area.
True to their word, the city had made the campers move. The street was empty, but where did the people go?
We turned the corner and voila!
There everyone was in a new spot.
The only thing the city successfully accomplished was to move the camp four blocks deeper into neighborhood.
On the plus side, folks said city workers didn’t throw their stuff away this time.

With whipping winds and a windchill of 17 degrees in the War Zone this afternoon, we did outreach to women in makeshift tarp shelters along with those lying on bare sidewalks, covered in blankets or sleeping bags.
We didn’t ask women to come out in the wind. Instead, we called to them where they huddled to learn sizes for leggings and hoodies.
We heard over and over as we passed food, pads, tampons, socks, gloves and hats through slits in the shelters and blankets, “We’re freezing.”
We also learned the city had given encampments up and down the street notice that they would be swept tomorrow morning, when temperatures are predicted to be 23 degrees and wind gusts 28 mph.

There is a debate among all of us at AsUR about whether to thank the APD High Risk Victims Unit for arresting several traffickers yesterday.

While we are glad the traffickers are in jail and the victims are safe, we can’t forget that six months ago APD knowingly arrested dozens of trafficking victims for prostitution. These victims, once they were released from jail, faced beatings and other brutal punishments from their traffickers.

How can we thank APD for helping victims in this one case when they willingly harmed dozens more?

APD deserves no praise until they vow to stop arresting trafficking victims once and for all.

This should not be too hard for them. Every other single law-enforcement agency stopped arresting for prostitution more than a decade ago, including the New Mexico Department of Justice, the FBI, and Homeland Security.

ABQRaw, do not think for one second that you are heroes.
Two traffickers might have been arrested after you publicly humiliated and objectified their victims by posting a photo of them online, but that doesn’t make you the good guys.
If you want to really help, stop f**king running the photo of the victims, at least one of whom is a child.

ABQraw, you are the best advertising traffickers could ask for.
You write with glee about the “scantily clad ladies” on Central Avenue and remark how they are part of “a new crop” ready to be purchased.
How did you know that this is the exact phrasing traffickers use when advertising their victims online? In fact, “a new crop” is the wording most often used by massage parlors when they bring another group of captives to town.
It’s also interesting that you mentioned the women telling passersby to “stop filming them or there would be violent consequences.”
Did you know that the violence consequences would be against them? The women in the photo you took will be brutally punished for what you did, then put into a motel room and forced to service dozens of men a day. You did that. You caused that.
Do you want us to tell you the names of the women you just sentenced to hell? Because we can tell you. We’ve been bringing them pads and tampons for months, trying to gain their trust and maybe someday get them off of the street and away from their trafficker.
We were most concerned about an underage girl — a child, really — who was with them. But we don’t have to tell you about her. You’ve already seen her. In the photo that you took and so casually posted online.

It took two cars of volunteers almost 3 hours to drive around the International District today and give out about 80 gift bags we’d made for the women.
Each team then wrote up a report.
Report from Car 1: We were impressed by how calm the streets were and the peace and good cheer the women we helped shared with us, even in their difficult circumstances. Many women recognized us and knew the Bad Guy List. One old friend spotted us driving and ran after our car, waving her hands. We didn’t recognize her and kept driving because the street was crowded and we wanted to circle back with our other outreach car. When we finally caught up to her, we all had a good laugh.
Report from Car 2: As we drove around, we debated how to best wish each other happiness at this time of year. We aren’t a faith-based group and we have volunteers of all backgrounds and beliefs, so would it be appropriate to say Merry Christmas? Happy holidays? In the end, we decided the best thing to do was yell “Die Hard” at each other.
Later on, we were getting a gift bag for a trafficking victim while her trafficker —in a white sedan — kept circling the area, looking for her. We decided to mess with him. We jumped in the car and chased him down some back roads. Just to let him know he was the one being watched for a change.
Die Hard!

Over the course of the last few months donations have come in from a variety of sources across the city which AsUR has put toward creating gifts for the women that we serve. AsUR often hands out necessities such as tampons, pads, hygiene items, and condoms to women who are living on the streets of Albuquerque, but for the holidays we try to focus on giving a gift that is meaningful and fun, and that makes our ladies feel a little more normal during the gift giving season.
This year we received donations of handmade purses from the Hip Stitch as well as backpacks and waterbottles from one of our sister organizations, A Light In The Night, in which we put things like coloring and word each books, colored pencils, candy, hot chocolate packs. We also got candy, first aid kits, and other items from The Kindness Project. Along with makeup that we have been saving up from our donations, we created about 50 backpacks and bags filled with goodies to give away for Christmas along with the Bad Guy List.
This could not have been possible without our many volunteers who assembled the bags, and the many organizations and sources who contributed these items. A kind thanks to all who contributed this season.

We basically are just giving away beads and vintage 1980s jewelry tomorrow.
The reason: We don’t have the expertise or the time to use it all.
So, it’s all up for grabs for free at our Jewelry Jamboree tomorrow from 1-3 pm at Quirky Used Books, 120 Jefferson St NE.
If you want to hang out with us and fix some of the broken pieces — which you can take home or we can give out to women on the street —that would be great. Otherwise, it’s first come first serve.
Donations welcome, but not required.
