They say that medicine is an art, and if that’s true, the operating room is where some of the most critical masterpieces are created. We often celebrate the surgeons who lead the procedure, but anyone who has ever stepped foot into an OR knows a fundamental truth: a surgeon cannot do their job without an outstanding surgical technologist by their side.
During Surgical Technologist Week, we shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes. Before the first incision is ever made, and long after the patient has gone to recovery, Surgical Technologists are hard at work. You are the masters of the sterile field, the guardians of patient safety, and the keepers of order in a high-stakes environment.
Our motto, "Aeger Primo"—the patient first—isn't just a phrase. It is a commitment we live out every single shift. From anticipating every move, often placing the exact instrument a surgeon needs into their hand before they even have to ask for it, to a level of precision, focus, and expertise, this isn't something you can just "wing." It takes dedication, deep knowledge of human anatomy, and an incredible amount of skill.
Beyond the technical expertise, each one of you brings a profound sense of calm and humanity to the OR. For a patient, facing surgery can be one of the scariest moments of their life. You are the compassionate face they see as they are prepped, helping to ease their anxieties with your professional and positive presence.
To my fellow surgical technologists: thank you! Thank you for your tireless work ethic, your focus on safety, and the seamless efficiency you bring to the OR every single day. You make a profound difference in the lives of patients and your colleagues. Each facility simply would not run without you. Thank you for being exceptional surgical technologists!
