BrainCorps has wrapped up their first chapter of the year!

The past four weeks, our members have been teaching the students of Harrington Elementary how to get comfortable with their math skills. They learned how to build confidence while doing math and learned that making mistakes is crucial to learning. Our members will spend the next two weeks going over what worked and what didn’t to create the next chapter’s curriculum.

Over the past two weeks, Brain Corps has been working with students at Harrington Elementary to build their confidence and skills in math! We started by creating a social contract together, establishing our shared values and expectations to help create a positive and supportive learning environment. Since then, we’ve been playing a variety of interactive math games and activities designed to make learning fun while strengthening foundational skills such as addition, subtraction, and problem-solving. Most importantly, we’re working to help students recognize that they are capable mathematicians and that making mistakes is an important part of learning. We’re excited to continue building their confidence and watching them grow!

Get to know Taylore! Taylore is from Harbor Springs, Michigan and is double majoring in Marketing and Psychology. A fun fact about her she’s been skiing for a long time.

Get to know Shanice!

Shanice is from Dallas, Texas and is majoring in Biology with a concentration in Public Policy. A fun fact about her is she’s the youngest of 10 children!

A highlight of her time with Brain Corps has been building genuine relationships with students. She loves getting to know their personalities, interests, and learning styles, creating a supportive and comfortable environment where they can grow. Those connections make it easier to motivate students and see real progress in both their academics and confidence.

Through this experience, Shanice has also grown personally and professionally. Strengthening her communication, patience, and problem-solving skills while learning how to support diverse learners in meaningful ways.

We’re officially halfway through Chapter 4! Over the past two week AmeriCorps members have been leading BrainCorps with our students, diving into how math shows up in nature.

From counting tree rings and spotting patterns to exploring shapes and measuring growth, our students have discovered just how naturally math shows up in everyday life. Of course we have also made time for games, movement and spending as much time in the spring weather as possible.

We are taking a short break for Harrington Elementary School, Marshall Public Schools Spring Break but we will resume next week for our final two weeks of math-filled fun!
