So - we've got Harvey Fierstein's play "TORCH SONG" opening this Thursday at Great Escape Stage Company in Marshall. I'm lucky enough to be playing Fierstein's role and it's been a tremendous challenge to bring this big-hearted, loveable, gay, Jewish drag queen named Arnold Beckoff to life. The show is filled with a cavalcade of laughs, wise advice to the heart, realistic and recognizable heartbreak, loveable and flawed characters, and now-familiar ideas about the LGBTQ experience that were (and, sadly, remain) groundbreaking for the time this show was written - 40 years ago. This play obviously isn't a "household name" (although I hope the playwright is!) and local audiences haven't made many reservations yet - but I truly hope ALL of my friends and family (not to mention the friends and families of my fellow castmates) will buy a ticket to experience this beautiful show. As our dear friend, Gayland Spaulding, used to opine: "I wish our audiences wouldn't forget to trust us from show to show - GESC does high quality productions and, while they might not be familiar with a show beforehand, they'll definitely love it once they come to see it!"
