Happy Earth Day from CSE! 🌎💚

Earth Day is a celebration of community, creativity, and caring for the place we call home. We’re so grateful for everyone who shows up, pitches in, and supports our work to keep sustainability moving forward on campus. 🐿️🌿

These photos are a sweet reminder of what’s possible when we work together to protect our home and strengthen our local community. We’re so proud of what CSE and our campus partners have accomplished and we can’t wait for what’s next! ✨

The weather should be fine on Thursday afternoon and Sunday & our volunteers are ready to help Albion College Students, Staff and Faculty experience the Kalamazoo River!

A few things to keep in mind:
- The boathouse doesn't have restrooms.
- Please leave valuables at home.
- Borrow life jackets, canoe and paddles.
- Wear shoes that you can get wet and won't fall off in the current. - Old tennis shoes are best.

1 hour+ paddle: 45 minutes paddling upstream from the boathouse to 29.5 mile road/Newburg Rd bridge (where there are several culverts beneath the road). Then 15 minute float back downstream to get out where you put in. Latest launch time is 5:30 on Thursday and 4:30 on Sunday.

The Beese-Havens Boathouse is located on the banks of the Kalamazoo River on the college campus behind the Dow just at the Hannah Street bridge.

Additional open hours will be posted week-by-week for the remainder of the semester weather permitting and based on volunteer availability. Email [email protected] with any questions.

February 14th is Anna Howard Shaw Day! Anna Howard Shaw was born on February 14th, 1847 in England. Her family emigrated to the United States in 1851, to Massachusetts, moving to Big Rapids, Michigan, when Anna was twelve. As a young adult, she supported herself by preaching, unusual for women at that time, and was a student at Albion College (living right here! where present-day Robinson Hall now stands). She was the first woman to be ordained in the Methodist Protestant Church, earned a medical degree from Boston University, was the
greatest orator of the women’s suffrage movement, and was an important leader of the movement, becoming the longest-serving president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Her life partner was Lucy Anthony, and Anna was also a longtime friend and valuable colleague of Lucy’s aunt, Susan B. Anthony. The 19th Amendment, which prohibits the United States and its states
from denying the right to vote to its citizens on the basis of s*x, was ratified in 1920, a few months after Anna’s death. Happy Anna Howard Shaw Day to us all!
