At exponentially higher rates, the Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender communities are at the forefront of facing discriminatory and abusive practices. We at In Our Own Voices seek to address these issues through our mission, which is to work for and ensure the physical, mental, spiritual, political, cultural, and economic survival and growth of Le***an, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people of color communities.
Near the end of last month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered state child welfare officials to launch child abuse investigations into reports of Transgender children receiving gender-affirming care. Referring to gender-affirming therapy as child abuse vilifies the identities that are meant to be celebrated, weaponizing systems to cause further harm. We at IOOV know all too well the impact of stigmatization on the TGNCNB community, as it is often cited as the reason for brutal attacks and other bias related instances on a community that is seeking compassion, understanding, and safe visibility.
We support Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming youth who advocate for the right to stay true to themselves, to reclaim and clutch control over their bodies. We support parents who care for their children, and who seek the healthcare and information that aids and at times, saves our youth.
If you are in need of support or are survivor of a bias related crime, In Our Own Voices would like to take this time to remind our community that we are a resource whose doors will always remain open. Please feel free to connect with us as we move and heal through these times, and make use of our Supportline, which is available from Monday through Friday, from 9AM to 8PM at 518-432-4341.
