What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, is a day to honor members of the military who were killed in service, both during deployments overseas or in training and service in the U.S. Across the country.

Our Post is named "Barr-Allen-Kennedy" specifically for "Barr", named after Joseph Alonzo Barr, Albany native, still declared Missing in Action from WWII. "Allen" named after Neal Allen, Army-Airforce, Albany native, killed in action WWII.

As you enjoy your Memorial Day weekend, keep in mind the true spirit of Memorial Day.

Honoring our sole WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veteran VFW member, CMSgt (retired) USAF, James Tilton. Still hasn't finished his Killions from our last visit, he decided to nurse his drink.

A special thank you to Ace Hardware at Oakland store for their generous donation of 200 US Flags in honor of Memorial Day weekend. Anyone interested in receiving a Flag is welcome to visit the Post. Donations are greatly appreciated. Funds will be used to replenish our Relief Fund.

We will be marching in the National Memorial Day Parade this Monday, May 25.

Watch for the YMs carrying parade banners and organizational streamers for participating groups.

Ten Albany Young Marines will be in the parade along with Registered Volunteers.

The parade will also be available online to enjoy!!!

Officer vacancies with our Post for program year 2026-27, which starts in July 2026. Requirements for these is to be a VFW member in good standing.

Sr Vice Commander - fulfills role supporting the Commander role in the Commanders absence. Responsibility in maintaining the membership rolls, expired/expiring dues of members, and recruiting for new members.

Jr. Vice Commander - assists Commander, with main role with Youth Activities. Interact with Boy Scouts, JROTC, Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy programs.

If these positions are not filled by next month, we'll persue closing our charter. VFW is a membership driven organization, with lack of interest from members, there will be no need to keep the charter, and Post alive.

We're proud of our accomplishments over the past year, and the community support provided. All this takes sweat equity from our members.
