The NYS Gaming Commission has confirmed that 6-year-old Rock the Weekend, pictured below, was killed at Belmont on August 11th, citing a “grave health prognosis.” Details are, as usual, lacking.

Rock the Weekend had been put to the whip (raced) 39 times, most recently at Saratoga on July 24th.

His killing brings the number of confirmed horse kills at New York State tracks to 61 so far this year — 14 of them at Belmont. 💔

Last week, these horses were injured in U.S. races and had to be removed from the track by “equine ambulance.” 💔

While their fates remain unknown for now, through our ongoing FOIA reporting, we may eventually get confirmations of their deaths.

And these are only the horses we know about. Countless others endure the daily cruelties of horseracing: the incessant grinding of unformed, 2-year-old bodies, control exerted through tongue ties and metal bits, and solitary confinement for over 23 hours a day. This is horseracing. 💔

At least 16 horses confirmed dead at Texas racetracks so far this year. 💔

Through a FOIA request to the Texas Racing Commission, we have confirmed 16 kills, most involving horses just 2 or 3 years old. The records include shattered legs, internal hemorrhage, catastrophic fractures, collapse, and paralysis. The necropsy report for 3-year-old Compendium, pictured below, is as follows: "Poor performance, collapsed after finish line, died on track. Abdomen filled with blood; most likely diagnosis: rupture of the caudal aorta.”

End animal cruelty. End horseracing. 🚫🏇

Two confirmed kills at Delaware Park: 4-year-old Relator and 6-year-old Tunisian Spring. 💔

On June 20th, during the 3rd race, Relator was "pulled up...escorted off in an equine ambulance." Just four races later, Tunisian Spring, pictured below, “sustained an injury, pulled up crossing the wire, and was transported off of the track in an equine ambulance.” Both have since been confirmed dead. This is horseracing. 🚫🏇

America, is this what we call entertainment?

On Saturday, August 8th, 3-year-old Absolute Domination fell during the 2nd race at Horseshoe Indianapolis. The chart’s entire account: “fell, equine ambulance.”

We do not yet know whether he survived. But we do know this: an immature, unwilling animal was sent onto the track to run at breakneck speed for human gambling and entertainment—and collasped into the dirt, requiring an ambulance.

This is not sport. It is exploitation. And the horses pay the price. 🐴

🚨 PROTEST AT LAUREL PARK — TOMORROW 🚨

Nine horses have been killed at Laurel Park so far this year. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of Maryland taxpayer dollars continue to be poured into an industry in which horses are confined, whipped, injured, and killed for gambling and "entertainment."

Tomorrow, August 9th, from 1:00–2:30 PM, we’ll be outside Laurel Park calling on Governor Wes Moore and Maryland’s leaders to stop subsidizing horseracing and put an end to this abusive, cruel industry.

Maryland has already confirmed 434 horse kills at its tracks since 2014. How many more horses must suffer and die at the expense of taxpayer dollars?

Animal cruelty yesterday (and everyday) at Saratoga Race Course...

Three horses required the ambulance to get off the track: Jackson’s Dixie, Shezanarticqueen, and Starship Titan. An additional three horses suffered “heat distress”: Until Last Call, Sir Walta, and Deep Manhattan.

What some in racing dismiss as “fun and games” — even comparing young horses to “Christmas lights” — is, from any objective perspective, a disturbing display of control and abuse. Look at how they are yanking on the rein, which is attached to the painful bit.

The chart describes two-year-olds Solo Stryker, Monaco Crown, and Parea as “a bit fractious,” “a bit rank,” and “reluctant.” These are two-year-olds. Solo was being raced for the first time, while the other two were only in their second race.

To those who wager on horseracing, we implore you to reconsider. And ultimately, you hold all the cards: no more bets, no more races; no more races, no more kills. No more abusing unformed bodies. No more extreme, unrelenting confinement. No more whipping and drugging. No more buying, selling, trading and dumping. No more maiming and destroying. No more pain and suffering.

In a landscape that abounds with other gambling options – casinos, lotteries, real sports played by consenting human beings – has not the time at long last arrived to let these poor animals be? 💔

Through a FOIA request to the Washington Racing Commission, we have confirmed the deaths of 5 horses at Emerald Downs thus far this year. 💔

Phantom Ride, pictured below, was killed following a training at Emerald Downs on May 10th. “Catastrophic fetlock failure: [multiple] fractures, complete tearing of several tendons and ligaments.” Also: “osteochondral disease [both forelimbs].” And this: “Gross finding [of] multiple chronic gastric ulcers are common in performance horses, often associated with low-forage, high-grain diets; stress; intense exercise; NSAID usage; and/or prior gastric myiasis.” He was six years old. 🚫🏇
