On December 24, WISE staff administered food aid packages to about 125 families in Kabul. WISE raised $4,500 for this distribution. The packages included flour, sugar, and cooking oil. ShamshadNews - شمشادنیوز aired a news segment regarding WISE’s latest humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan.

As winter sets in, nearly 23 million people -- more than half the population -- are facing extreme levels of hunger, according to the United Nations. At least a million children under 5 are at risk of dying from starvation. The vast majority of Afghans rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, but the country has lost 40% of its harvest this year to the drought (WFP). This has caused the cost of staples like wheat and bread to skyrocket. (CNN)

WISE is planning a larger feed next month. Please donate via Venmo or http://PayPal.me/wiseafghanistan. Your contribution could save a life.

Today marks 100 days since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and the collapse of the former U.S.-backed government. The country is in a full-blown economic and humanitarian crisis as a result of the suspension of foreign aid, the freezing of Afghan government assets and international sanctions on the Taliban. It has been a difficult time for our team members, our students, and our beneficiaries.

With winter approaching, the famine will only worsen. The demand for maternal health services are at an all time and many of our partner health facilities have either shut down or are risk of collapsing due to no funding, supplies, or employees.

We have received many heartfelt messages from all of you and will update you on our ongoing and upcoming activities to help alleviate the humanitairan crisis. At this time we are doing food distributions to feed those at risk of starvation. We have provided food packages to over 250 families so far and our goal is to provide to an additional 3000 families - allowing us to provide a one month supply of food for up to 25,000 people.

We won’t see stability or peace if we don’t recognize the value, power, and potential of girls. Afghan girls are deserving of every chance and opportunity to pursue their dreams and no religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation can justify holding them back. We call on all local and international partners to join us in continuing to empower girls in Afghanistan through health and educational resources at a time where it is more crucial than ever

We are organizing an emergency bread distribution to address the current situation in parts of Afghanistan, where people have been displaced. Thanks to private donations, we were able to start distributing this week and we would like to open this opportunity for our online community.

If you’d like to help alleviate the pain of these families, please consider a donation to -afghanistan (PayPal). A contribution of $300 can feed 1,000 people.

WISE staff on the ground are reporting that the Taliban are forcing people out of their homes in some parts of Afghanistan and now are left without food and clothing.
According to the U.N., 270,000 have been displaced this year, in addition to the 4 million previously displaced.

This past month we administered high-dosage Vitamin A supplements to 16,400 children in Kandahar province.

Medical students from Malalay University in Kandahar bravely administered these doses to children in Taliban-controlled regions despite a measles outbreak.

According to Save the Children, the pandemic has exacerbated the rate of childhood malnutrition in the past year due to a breakdown in supply lines and lockdown measures. Thank you to Salaam Nutritionals for their generous donation of the vitamin A supplements.
