What you'll learn:
๐ก How-To Steps for Storytelling: Learn to craft your own message that will resonate with the communities you serve.
๐ก Advocacy in Action: Learn how years of advocacy led to a New York State Education Department regulation for Climate Education in K-12 schools, the role youth voice played in the recent success, and how to use lessons learned from this effort to make your future advocacy efforts a success. Hear directly from New York State Regent Roger Catania and a panel of high school and college student climate activists!
๐ก Craft Messages Centered in Health Equity and Social Justice: Learn from an Indigenous storyteller and artist on considerations for health equity and how to tailor your messages for diverse audiences.
๐ก Connection Between Climate Change and Health: Connect the dots between climate change and your area of public health. From preparing for extreme weather events to the health effects of extreme heat or cold, all fields of public health have a role to play and will reap the benefits from true involvement.
Still excited about the Winter Olympics? Lake Placid is home to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics! Hear from Art Devlin, Mayor of Lake Placid and son of Art Devlin Sr., a two-time Olympian in 1952 (Oslo) and 1956, the last time it was held in Cortina! Mayor Devlin is planning to regale us with stories of the Olympics and its impact on public health and the Lake Placid economy.
This year has been particularly challenging for public health, and this workshop will give you a chance to de-stress and have fun! In two concurrent workshops, you'll have the opportunity to craft and take home your own climate-related art. In the process, you will learn how art can be a powerful tool in public health communications.
