Capital Roots donates hundreds of pounds of produce and eggs weekly to the RWC, providing food assistance to approximately 65 families. Funding is provided, in part, by The Seymour Fox Memorial Foundation to purchase culturally appropriate foods to supplement our food pantry, such as rice, lentils, beans, and spices.

Our MSW intern, Michael, prepared potatoes and kale from Capital Roots, cooked in oil and seasoned with spices, both provided by the Seymour Fox Foundation. Cooking kale, an unfamiliar vegetable, gave our families the opportunity to try something new, and they all took fresh kale home to prepare!

Come join us for a Community Gardening Day at the Refugee Welcome Center gardens on October 17! 🌱🧄 We’ll be getting the gardens ready for the colder months with garlic planting and fall cleanup. We’ll prepare beds and plant garlic for next year’s harvest, clean up beds and rows, tackle some weeding, spread mulch where needed, and generally start to get the garden tucked in for winter. This weekend, the Refugee Welcome Center was a part of three meaningful neighborhood and community-building events. From our garden and cleanup workday, to sharing our restorative practice efforts at the Anti-Bullying event, to our evening Language Practice meeting. Each event created another opportunity for people to connect, learn, and associate.

These events reflect the RWC’s role as more than just a community space. We are a hub for cultural discourse and celebrate the many cultures that make our community stronger.

Big thanks to the SUNY Albany groups National Association of Black Accountants, Delta Sigma Theta sorority and NAACP for the help this weekend.

This weekend Bahati made a delicious Burundi pulao rice with beef. This dish was deliciously seasoned with curry, ginger and garlic. Thank you Bahati for sharing this dish with us.
