In 1977, Congress passed the Community Reinvestment Act to end redlining — the systematic denial of credit to entire communities based on race.

For nearly five decades, it has required banks to prove they are serving all the communities where they take deposits. That commitment has produced nearly $5 trillion in qualifying mortgages and small business loans, expanded affordable housing investment and kept bank branches open in communities that would otherwise have been left behind.

The proposed rollback would let hundreds of banks walk away from that obligation. Sign on to our letter by October 7 and submit your comment before October 13.

Thinking about taking on a fixer-upper? The Affordable Housing Partnership is offering Rehab Ready, a workshop focused on helping home buyers navigate the acquisition and renovation process.

Home buyers that are interested in buying a fixer upper or home that needs repairs will want to attend this webinar on Tuesday, October 27 from 5:30 to 7pm online.

The program will cover acquisition-rehab loan options, the process & timelines, work scopes, budgeting and hiring a consultant and contractor. Buying a home that needs work can give a first-time buyer more property options, build equity, and allow for more customization. However, buyers need to be prepared for challenges. Local professionals can help. For more information and to register contact 518-434-1730 or www.ahphome.org/class-list

One thing to know about the pocket rescission that illegally cancels funding already allocated by Congress is that it claws back all funding for Housing Counseling - $56 million. A small amount for a nationwide program, but it is clear that the Trump administration does not understand the importance of housing agencies in homebuying, credit building, scam avoiding, foreclosure reducing efforts in the midst of a housing crisis. Please contact our area Congressional Representatives Paul Tonko, Josh Riley and Elise Stefanik.

President Trump announced plans to cancel $810 million in Congressionally approved spending, a move that some in his own party are calling illegal.
