PAUSE People of Albany United for Safe Energy PAUSE stands for People of Albany United for Safe Energy. To date no shipments have come in.

This group, founded in January of 2014, began in opposition to New York's plans to ship Canadian tar sands oil into New York. We currently work to mitigate climate collapse, mostly through public campaigns in the streets. PAUSE meets the 4th Thursday of each month from 5:30 - 6:30P at the Delaware Public Library, 331 Delaware Ave., Albany. Anyone who agrees with our mission statement is invited to attend.

Gov. Hochul wants to build 5 new nuclear power plants in NY. Legislation has been introduced to have a 2.5 year moratorium while an independent assessment is done of the issue. Dr. Greg Jaczko, former chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and nuclear economist David Schlissel talk about the issues surrounding nuclear power and why bringing nuclear power back to New York is not a solution to our power problems.

On April 3, 2026, The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, New York welcomed acclaimed environmentalist Bill McKibben to discuss his latest book, "Here Comes the Sun." Following his talk, McKibben spoke with local environmental leader Benita Law-Diao about the hope of innovative solutions like solar energy and what is at stake if we do not act now. The talk was part of a fundraiser for Water Justice Lab, an initiative of NATURE Lab, which works with local youth, training them to become stewards of our water resources and inspiring the next generation of climate justice leaders.

NYCP's Renewable Energy Speakers Series hosted Jonathan Cohen, the Policy Director for the New York Solar Energy Industries Association (NYSEIA). Jonathan explained solar legislation currently under consideration in Albany, including the Accelerate Solar for Affordable Power (ASAP) ACT (Senate S6570A). New York surpassed its 6 GW goal more than a year ahead of schedule, in October 2024! The state is now well on track to meet the Governor’s expanded goal of 10 GW by 2030, with over 3.4 GW under development. With this rapid installation of distributed solar, it is time to increase the goal to 20 GW by 2035. Listen to the recording to understand why New York should pass the bill this session and how we can do it.

Despite recent reports that global warming and extreme weather are continuing to accelerate, Governor Hochul is pushing to roll back the goals in the state’s climate law (Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, CLCPA).

The Green Education and Legal Fund (GELF) called today for state lawmakers to reject Governor Hochul’s proposals to weaken the state’s climate law. It called instead for lawmakers to enact a carbon tax as part of the upcoming state budget, as well as to strengthen existing climate laws such as the Build Public Renewables (BPRA) and All Electric Buildings Act.

GELF said lawmakers should include in the state budget at least the $10 billion that the Hochul administration determined was needed annually when it wrote the state’s Climate Action Plan.

On January 28, the New York State legislature held a 12 hour hearing on the environmental and energy parts of the state budget. The bulk of the hearing was devoted to Q and A with the heads of the Governor’s various environmental agencies such as DEC, NYPA, NYSERDA, and the Public Service Commission. Many were surprised that the Governor failed to include any proposed amendments to weaken the state climate law, though those proposals may be coming later or will be done through the rule making powers of the PSC. There was largely no new major funding for climate action in the budget. In part one of our coverage, we hear from Liz Moran of Earth Justice, Alexis Goldsmith of Beyond Plastics, Shi Soin of TREEAge on behalf of NY Renews; and Anshul Gupta of New Yorkers for Clean Power. By Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Several hundred climate activists protested outside of the Governor’s State of the State address in Albany on Tuesday, urging her to invest in renewable energy rather than promoting fossil fuels and nuclear power while turning her back on the state’s climate law. Among the speakers are Renee Vogelsang of Frack Action; Assemblymembers Anna Kelles and Emily Gallagher; Dr. Sandra Steingraber; Kathy Nolan of Physicians for Social Responsibility; Matt of American Lung Association; Ethan Gormley of Citizen Action; Yvonne Taylor of Seneca Lake Guardians; Eric Weltman of Food and Water Watch; and others.

This is Climate Can’t Wait’s second annual report card on Governor Kathy Hochul. Governor Hochul received a D- on her 2024 report card. Shockingly, this year, she did even worse. An F implies that she did nothing. But her performance was worse than nothing, backsliding on meeting the mandates of New York’s 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA or Climate Law).

“With climate denier Donald Trump in charge of the federal government, it is critical that state governments take strong action to prevent climate collapse. Instead, Governor Hochul has joined Trump in doing the bidding of the fossil fuel and nuclear industries. Despite her claims to be concerned about affordability, she refuses to lower energy costs by rapidly replacing fossil fuels with much cheaper renewable energy and is adding another $30 billion plus to the nuclear subsidies for 4 plants. She refuses to follow both the climate law and the recommendations of the Climate Action Council. Especially troubling is her refusal to move forward with carbon pricing, which is essential both to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to raise the $10 billion her administration has said is needed annually to fund the transition to clean, affordable green energy,” said Mark Dunlea, convenor of PAUSE (People of Albany United for Safe Energy), the 350.org affiliate in the Capital District.
