We’re a week late, but honestly it’s never too late to share these amazing memories of the last day and night of our NeXt Doc 2026 Opening Week retreat!

Each of the fellows met with Bhawin (bhawin) and Darian (Darian Henry) for their next step conversations to outline their individual goals and desired futures for the fellowship year ahead. Our fellows also got their hands on cameras to film closing interviews with each other 🌟

After one last incredible dinner by Chef Maya (Maya Suchak) of Korean beef galbi with a variety of delicious sides, we had a chill night at the fire (Thank you chef + cinematographer & MATT KIM our ND fire tenders), some incredible star-gazing, a ping pong tournament, and of course card games for our last night!

It was a beautiful week of memories to last a lifetime - and we’re only getting started!

We look forward to the rest of the fellowship year where most of our activities will be virtual and focused on community workshops by presenting filmmakers, mentorship, skill and resource sharing, along with lots of opportunities for continued growth and artistic development!

Another chill day in Vermont for Day 6 of NeXt Doc!

Started the morning with a connect with our virtual 2026 NeXt Doc Fellows! @3.w.m_ taking time to connect, discuss what started their journey in filmmaking, and share their current projects.

Following that we had a Saturday brunch by Chef Maya () with a taco dinner by Chef Maya and Bhawin (bhawin)

Ending the night with a talent packed karaoke night, discovering our fellows amazing voices and dance skills. 💛

NeXt Doc - Day 5 🌟

Darius Clark Monroe () pulled up to the hills of Vermont! We started our morning with an impactful screening and workshop by Darius screening his 2019 short series “Racquet”, and talking about his unique approach to each film. In the evening we got to watch his latest project “Dallas, 2019” followed by a Q&A.

Between workshops and screenings, Chef Maya () of course kept us full - with a lunch of Harissa Chicken & Tofu bowls followed by a dinner of Chicken Tikka Masala, Pakoras & Chana Masala.

After a wonderful day of screenings, new knowledge and delicious meals - we of course enjoyed another Knicks win and played a few games of our own - of course one being “Up-Jenkins” (iykyk) 💛

NeXt Doc - Day 4 was a beautiful summer day in Vermont filled with relaxation, sun, and lake time.

We began the day with a trip to the lake and spent the morning there until a refreshing lunch by Chef Maya () of Chicken & Chickpea Curry Salad Wraps after a morning and afternoon soaking in the sun.

After a relaxing afternoon, Darian (.k.p.l.m) & Bhawin (bhawin) led a masterclass on S.E.N.S.E “Stress, Exercise, Nutrition, Sleep, Environment” and Trust which focused on protecting our spirit, soul & bodies as we move through spaces and do this work🧘🏾‍♀️

After our chill day we had a filling dinner of Lamb Kofta & Falafel, before our second night of Peer-to-Peer screenings, where we watched Nala’s () film “Adey & Mom”, Daniel’s () film “On your own”, Aryaki’s () film “Chains & Wheels” & a trailer to her new feature film “Udgam”, Aaron’s () rough cut of his film “Marrow”, Sungbin’s () film “After the Storm”, and ended the night with Xiomara’s () film “Black Diamonds” & the trailer to her film “Bicycle”

and ended it all off with homemade cookies from Chef Maya and a nighttime trip to the lake!

Another beautiful day in Vermont for Day 3 of NeXt Doc 2026!

Our morning started with a insightful Masterclass with bhawin on “Trying To Remember The Things I Forgot” & a sneak peak screening of “A Walk for Every Season” Bhawin & Maya’s film on Jun Sun.

Followed by a conversation amongst our Fellows, Bhawin, and Darian (.k.p.l.m) on Desired Futures and creating a community of practice.

After a busy morning and afternoon, Chef Maya blessed our plates with a lunch of tuna, omebushi onigiri, and egg sandos , followed by a dinner that evening of mango habanero glazed salmon 💛

After dinner we had our first night of peer-to-peer screenings, where we screened Matthew’s () “My Father was a Footballer”, Jamaica’s () “Croom Corridor”, Ntokozo’s (.mlaba) film “The Passage”, and Daleelah’s () “From Steinway, with love”.

After all the inspiration and talent we witnessed, it was only right to end the night with a Knicks win & star gazing. 🌟

NeXt Doc - DAY 2! 🎦

Our day started with learning more about one another with Live Documentary Interviews between fellows, Community agreements, Intro to the ecosystem, and frameworks of NeXt Doc led by & .k.p.l.m

Our Presenting Filmmaker & 2018 NeXt Doc Fellow - Jalena Keane Lee (.kl) presented an outstanding Masterclass on “How to become a full time Filmmaker - without losing your mind or selling your soul” followed by a screening & Q&A of her documentary Standing above the clouds

We also connected with some of our virtual fellows 💛

NeXt Doc 2026 - DAY 1!

The 2026 Fellows have all touched down in Vermont ready for an inspiring week ahead with a group of young visionary Black, indigenous, and POC storytellers, artists, and filmmakers.

We started day 1 with a delicious dinner by head chef Maya () and a welcome circle outlining the week ahead.

We look forward to what the rest of this week holds! 💛
