At the end of September, the Albany Firefighters shooting team competed in a charity shooting event held by Blue Line United - aka:BLU against 35 other teams.

This event is held annually, and this years event was held to assist our brother Wayne Brennan, with treatment and various needs following a burn injury in the line of duty.

Our team of Union Firefighters finished a respectable 6th place.

Albany Firefighters stand with our brothers and sisters with the Professional Firefighters of Durham North Carolina IAFF L668, following the Line of Duty Death of FF Andrew Brokes early this morning

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.
 
Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.
 
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.
 
In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Your capital city firefighters once again saw another busy period this past weekend. From Friday at 8am-Monday at 8am (D, A and B shifts), collectively saw just under 300 calls for service, with busier than normal overnights.

Of these calls, it should be noted that many were to the tax exempt properties in Albany, including SUNY Albany and properties that mainly cater to SUNY students.

Albany Firefighters responded to SUNY Albany’s main campus 14 times for various calls, keeping in mind there is no direct financial contribution to city coffers to pay for things such as fire/EMS services.

Another new housing property, 1415 Washington Ave, which is under private ownership, and does pay taxes to Albany, but caters to SUNY Albany students, saw 12 calls during that same time frame.

Although are we treat each alarm as an emergency, most are nuisance alarms from malicious pulled fire alarms, smoke from cooking, people smoking and various other causes.

We believe in fair share and common sense. Tax exempt shouldn’t weigh on the tax payers shoulders.

Say hello to the Pine Bush Fire Station!

Located in the western most portion of the city, at 223 Washington Ave Extension, is Engine Co 4 who resides alone at this station. While this fire station’s area is not as densely populated as the other fire stations in Albany, this stations first due area covers the most square mileage and responds to high need locations.

The Pine Bush Station is a combined Fire and Police station that is separated in the building. Built in 1977 to protect the growing western portion of Albany, this Engine Co was originally located on Hudson Ave in downtown Albany.

Engine 4’s primary neighborhoods they respond to are the Pine Bush and the Dunes.

Some of the target hazard locations in the Pine Bush Fire Stations response area are, the Nanotechnology complex, Teresian House, Crossgates Commons, NYS Thruway, Interstate 90, Daughters of Sarah nursing home, The Avila, Pine Bush Preserve, Six Mile Water Works, and many other medical and residential units.

Engine Co 4 is staffed with 4 Firefighter/EMTs, however they are routinely staffed with 3. In 2025 Engine 4 ran 1644 calls for service.

Fun fact: Engine 4 is the only engine with an elevate waterway. While it may appear this is a ladder truck, it is not. Elevated waterways or “master streams” are a helpful tool in large fires requiring a lot of water to be applied. A UTV unit is also assigned with Engine 4. This can be utilized to access patients in the Pine Bush preserve’s hiking trails.
