178 years ago today, the Albany City landscape was significantly changed leading to the frame work of the modern day Albany Fire Department.

The Great Fire of Albany started in the area of Herkimer St and Broadway in the South End/Pastures neighborhood in 1848. Volunteer fire companies, who served Albany at that time, were quickly overwhelmed with the rapid fire spread from high winds and high temperatures of the day. By the time the fire was finally under control, nearly 600 buildings had been destroyed, along with several boats in the river and several lives had been lost. Mutual aid had been summoned from departments including Troy, West Troy (Watervliet) , Greenbush (Rensselaer) and Cohoes, requiring men to pull their hand pumpers by foot many miles to Albany.

Many reforms followed the fire, including building codes, more regulations of the volunteer fire companies and eventually total elimination of the volunteers in favor of professional firefighters being on duty in the firehouses and ready to respond.

JJ was sworn in today by Albany Mayor Dr. Dorcey Applyrs at a brief ceremony at city hall. We look forward to his membership in our union and we’ll see you in the firehouse soon!
