Happy Memorial Day!
Reward after time spent at Riverview Cemetery uncovering three overgrown gravesites!

I discovered the flat, overgrown gravestones just south of their grandfather, Stephen D Haley in Riverside Cemetery, Albany when I was putting flowers at Stephen Haley’s gravesite. I cleared the dirt and grass that had nearly obscurred the gravestones for Missouri E Helm (1853-1858), Joseph Lane Helm (1853-1855).

Two of these gravesites were children of Stephen’s oldest daughter, Amanda Haley Helm and Lawrence S Helm, who came to Oregon Territory via the plains route in 1851. Samantha married Helm after they arrived in Oregon Territory. On the far right is the gravesite of S. A. Douglas Helm (1851-1853), a half sibling of Missouri and Joseph. Douglas’s mother was Susannah Rea, first wife of Lawrence Helm. She died on the journey west at Dry Creek.

Our first meeting after the summer break is scheduled for Saturday, September 2. Join us for “Using Timelines to Solve Brick Walls” presented by Nanci Re*****on.

Nanci became interested in using timelines because of her work with the “brick wall” group at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon in Portland. The group needed a framework for people to submit their research problems. Timelines proved to be useful – both as a way to organize materials and to put a person into historical perspective. This presentation will cover the steps for creating a time line, show examples from the brick wall group and illustrate the creation of a simple timeline from information found in a family Bible.

We look forwarding to seeing you at the Albany Public Library Meeting Room, 2450 14th Ave. SE, Albany at 1:15 pm on September 2, 2017. For more information call the LGS Library at 541-791-1618 or visit our web site at www.lgsoregon.org.

Mark your calendar for our first 2017 meeting. On January 7th, the program will feature a “Genealogical Resource Panel” comprised of representatives from four local organizations. Guests from the Lebanon Genealogical Society, Scio Library and Museum, the Sweet Home Genealogical Society, and the Albany LDS Family History Center will provide information on how the resources they have may be useful in your research, as well as updates about their facilities and projects they are working on.

There are many sources of information in Linn County and knowing “where to go for what” can at times be challenging. Please join us on Saturday, January 7th, at 1:15 in the Public Meeting Room at the Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Ave SE for this informative program.

Have you checked out the Linn Genealogical Society’s web site at www.lgsoregon.org? In addition to information about our Society (officers, meetings, research services, etc.), we have a database search tool that you can use to do a name search of all our indexed records. Our indexed records include digitized images of all death certificates for Linn and Benton Counties from 1903 through 1965. The images for Linn County can be viewed online on our web site and the images for both counties can be viewed from the computers in the Society’s Research Room. Credit for the death certificate database goes to one of our great volunteers who spent hours at the Oregon State Archives taking digital photographs of these documents.
