Last week, state lawmakers voted to adopt the FY27 New York State Budget. We are grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Speaker Carl Heastie for negotiating a budget that protects food access amid rising food insecurity and harmful federal cuts.

We also applaud leaders in the legislature, including Senator Roxanne Persaud, AM Jessica González-Rojas, Senator Lea Webb, Senator Michelle Hinchey, AM Khaleel Anderson and Assemblywoman Maritza Davila, whose advocacy helped ensure critical state investments. Thank you for your commitment to the nearly 3 million New Yorkers struggling to put food on the table and their ability to access SNAP, WIC, and food assistance programs.

We are deeply thankful to the many New Yorkers who spoke up, contacted their elected officials, and asked for a state budget that protects food access. Your voice played a critical role in this budget cycle and will continue to have an impact in the months and years ahead.

Looking forward, our work continues until every New Yorker is free from hunger, poverty, and food insecurity. Read our full statement: hungersolutionsny.org/new-york-state-budget-protects-food-access-with-key-investments

SNAP is our nation's most effective anti-hunger program, helping nearly three million New Yorkers, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities, afford food each month.

But federal cuts are jeopardizing access to SNAP and the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP), New York's community-based SNAP navigator network that helps families understand eligibility, apply, and keep their benefits.

At the same time, local WIC agencies are struggling to keep up with growing demand after a decade of nearly flat funding, threatening access to vital nutrition and health services during pregnancy and early childhood.

A new op-ed in Long Island Business News outlines what New York State must do in this year’s budget to protect SNAP, WIC, and NOEP, and ensure families can continue putting food on the table.

A new report from New York Health Foundation finds that more than 1 in 5 eligible New Yorkers are not enrolled in SNAP, leaving billions of dollars in food assistance and economic activity unrealized.

The report highlights the essential role of Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) SNAP navigators in closing that gap: Between 2024 and 2025, navigators reached 160,000 potentially eligible households and enrolled more than 30,000, work that generated $201 million in economic activity statewide.

With federal SNAP outreach funding set to be cut in half beginning October 2026, the report makes a clear recommendation: New York State must fully fund NOEP SNAP navigators to preserve access and keep closing the gap.

We're grateful to New York Health Foundation for elevating this research at such a critical moment. Read the report: nyhealthfoundation.org/resource/understanding-the-snap-participation-gap-in-new-york-2/

On Provider Appreciation Day, we're celebrating the dedicated childcare providers who nourish New York's children through CACFP. At A Child's Place at Unity House in Troy, CACFP supports more than 156,000 nutritious meals a year, ensuring children build healthy eating habits and have reliable access to nutritious food while in care.

Our new blog post highlights how CACFP helps A Child's Place nourish children, strengthen families, and build community: https://hungersolutionsny.org/how-a-childs-place-at-unity-house-uses-cacfp-to-nourish-a-community/

More than 462,000 New Yorkers rely on WIC, the highest enrollment in a decade. But funding hasn't kept pace, and local agencies are stretched thin.

WIC is one of public health's most proven programs. It improves birth outcomes, reduces infant mortality, prevents childhood obesity, and closes disparities in infant health. Every dollar invested returns an estimated $2.48 in savings. Last year, WIC purchases brought $540 million in federal dollars back into New York's local economies.

As lawmakers put the finishing touches on the state budget over the next few days, we urge them to include $30 million in additional funding for WIC. The families who need it can't wait.

As the school year winds down, schools have an opportunity to take a fresh look at breakfast and consider new approaches to feeding students in the fall. Schuylerville Central School District Food Service Director Sarah Keen shares strategies to improve access to breakfast by tailoring options to different grade levels.

🍳 High school students receive smoothies, egg bakes for added protein, and build-your-own options.
🥯 Middle school students need convenience, so a breakfast cart provides grab-and-go options near the entrance.
🍎 Elementary school students are offered simpler options, and fun, themed days like National Hot Chocolate Day and Major League Baseball Opening Day keep their interest and drum up excitement!
