August is National Eye Exam Month!

At Lions Eye Bank of the Northeast, we know that healthy vision begins with a comprehensive eye exam. National Eye Exam Month is a timely reminder that an annual dilated eye exam does more than update your prescription — it can detect early signs of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other conditions that threaten sight.

Early detection saves vision. When eye disease is caught in its earliest stages, treatment is more effective and vision loss can often be prevented or slowed. For those who ultimately face corneal blindness, the gift of eye donation restores sight and transforms lives.

This month, we encourage everyone in our community to schedule an eye exam. Whether you have 20/20 vision or wear corrective lenses, a routine checkup is one of the most important steps you can take for your long-term eye health.

When you accidentally twin at the office, you have the take a photo! 💜

While our staff clearly matched today, did you know that corneal donations don't have to? Unlike whole organs, corneas don't require blood or tissue type matching to be transplanted. Because the cornea is avascular (meaning it has no blood supply), the risk for rejection is incredibly low - making it much easier to seamlessly pass on the gift of sight to someone in need.

On behalf of Lions Eye Bank of the Northeast, we mourn the passing of Lauren Shields, who died Friday evening at the age of 26.

Lauren was an inspiring advocate for organ and tissue donation whose leadership and advocacy directly contributed to the passage of Lauren’s Law, ensuring New Yorkers are asked about donation during key enrollment interactions. As a result of efforts like hers, more than half of New Yorkers are now registered donors.

Her lifelong resilience, advocacy, and dedication advanced donor registration and education across the state and motivated us all. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and all who were touched by her work. We will honor her legacy by continuing the mission she championed.
