Why does housing matter? Start with this: 106,089 people work in Albany but live somewhere else.

That's from the City of Albany's 2025 Housing Audit, which found that only 16,133 people both live and work in the city. The audit says Albany's housing imbalance "constrains economic mobility and limits population growth."

The audit also says partnerships with "nonprofit, mission-driven, and community-based developers will be critical" to closing that gap. That's our work. We've built 181 homes since 1988, including more than 60 in Sheridan Hollow, and four new modular homes are going up on Albany Street in North Albany right now.

More homes our neighbors can afford means more people who can live where they work, and a stronger city for all of us.

Calling all crafters. The Habitat ReStore is building a spooky village this Halloween, and your haunted house could be part of it.

Make a haunted house from upcycled materials like cardboard boxes or toilet paper rolls. Sign up online, then drop it off at Habitat ReStore in the Capital District before October 17. Shoppers will vote on their favorites, and we'll announce the winners on Halloween.

Entry is $10 per person, and teams are encouraged to give $50. Every entry helps raise funds for homes built with our neighbors.

Opportunity starts with a home.

Today is World Habitat Day, the United Nations' yearly reminder that everyone has a right to a safe, affordable place to live.

That's true in throughout the Capital District, and it's true around the world. The Habitat for Humanity network is building in all 50 states and about 70 countries to help make that a reality in communities like ours.

The homes look different everywhere we work. What's behind them is the same: neighbors building with neighbors.

Today we remember President Jimmy Carter on his birthday.

For nearly forty years he volunteered on Habitat build sites alongside Rosalynn, framing walls and hanging drywall next to the families who would live in those homes. He never treated it as a photo op. He treated it as important work and service to others.

We're still doing that work in his memory and he continues to inspire us to live a life of serving others.

The newest affordable housing on Albany Street arrived on Wednesday and was set on the foundation on Thursday last week.

That's why we build modular at Habitat. It's efficient. It's green. It's cost-effective. Just the type of housing working families in North Albany are looking for.

We've got it all. A Romanian glass candleholder, a vintage mirrors, a mid-century planter that somebody's grandmother bought new.

One of each, and when it's gone, it's gone. Your room ends up looking like nobody else's on the floor, and it costs less than the poster everyone else is buying.
