To learn more about how economic instability is affecting New York’s children, download the newly released 2026 KIDS COUNT® Data Book from our partners at the Annie E. New York falls in the WORST category for economic well-being. New York must do better for its children and families.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation 2026 KIDS COUNT® Data Book highlights how economic well-being for children and families varies across the country, including differences in family poverty, housing cost burden, parental employment and access to financial stability. When families can afford stable housing, nutritious food, health care and other essentials, children are more likely to thrive. But economic hardship can create lasting challenges for kids’ physical, mental and cognitive health. Explore the latest data and see how states compare in supporting family economic well-being at aecf.org.

Investing in children means investing in stronger communities and a stronger future. The Annie E. Casey Foundation 2026 KIDS COUNT® Data Book shows how child well-being varies across states and over time. While some states have made gains for kids since 2019, many continue to face setbacks. Despite the commitment to end child poverty, New York State ranks 30th in overall wellbeing. Every state has strengths to build on and opportunities to do more for children and families. "The youngest among us cannot vote on the policies that define their lives. It’s up to us to ensure that our kids thrive and New York can be the leader it can and should be."

In an op-ed in today's Times Union, Schuyler Center President and CEO Kate Breslin spotlights key data from the 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book by the Annie E. Casey Foundation —including the fact that 1 in 5 New York children live in poverty—and the need for action to end child poverty in NYS.

Schuyler Center welcomes this budget’s meaningful investment in child care, including record funding for child care assistance, pre-K, and universal child care pilot programs, and recognizes that the budget also neglects to cushion families and communities across our state as they lose health coverage, nutrition supports, and housing, while facing rising costs for basic needs.
