Built in 1852 for Thomas Suckley and later remodeled by his son Robert in the Queen Anne style, Wilderstein’s interiors showcase late 19th-century elegance—from a Flemish library to a silk-draped Louis XVI salon.

Landscape designer Calvert Vaux created scenic trails across the grounds, and Margaret “Daisy” Suckley, FDR’s cousin and confidante, ensured the estate’s preservation for future generations.

In the winter of 1782–1783, the Continental Army’s final encampment stretched over 1,600 acres in New Windsor, with nearly 600 log huts for soldiers and their families.

Today, New Windsor Cantonment brings this “virtual city” to life—explore soldiers’ daily lives, watch blacksmithing and military drill demonstrations, and see artifacts, dioramas, and artillery uncovered from the site.

Did you know? The Hudson River Museum isn’t just galleries—it’s also Glenview, a stunning 1876 Hudson River home showcasing American Aesthetic (Arts and Crafts) design. Inside, you’ll find stenciled walls, carved woodwork, ceramic tiles, and furniture by renowned cabinetmaker Daniel Pabst, along with period paintings, sculpture, and fine china. 🖼️

Plus, the museum features Westchester’s only public planetarium and Hudson Riverama, an environmental gallery exploring the river’s rich ecosystem.

A century ago, in 1926, New York State acquired the abandoned Copake Iron Works—once one of the most complete rural ironworks in the entire Litchfield Iron District. Today, this remarkably intact 19th-century industrial site still stands proud at Taconic State Park, home to its rare blast furnace, original machine shop, ironworkers’ duplex, and more.

From its beginnings in 1845 to its recognition on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 2007, Copake Iron Works continues to tell the story of New York’s industrial past.

Located on the SUNY New Paltz campus, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art is home to over 5,000 works, from 4,000-year-old pre-Columbian artifacts to contemporary paintings. With a strong focus on Hudson Valley artists—including those from Woodstock’s Byrdcliffe Art Colony—the museum also features standout collections in Asian art, photography, and metalwork.

With 9,000+ sq. ft. of exhibition space and rotating exhibits that highlight both emerging and master regional artists, it’s one of the largest and most inspiring museums in the SUNY system.

Step back in time at Montgomery Place at Bard College, built in 1804 by Janet Livingston Montgomery and later transformed into a Classical Revival gem by architect Alexander Jackson Davis. With America’s first “outdoor room,” scenic trails, gardens, and sweeping views shaped with help from landscape designer Andrew Jackson Downing, the estate is a true Hudson Valley treasure. Now part of Bard College, its restored grounds are open for strolls, hikes, and picnics.
