A thriving and diverse population of mussels is critical to the health of the Flint River and we are deeply thankful for all the individuals and entities involved in protecting and restoring these vital critters. Mussels need clean water and enough of it. Projects by FRk, the Jones Center, the Water Policy Center, Flint River SWCD, and others, are in place to address this from a variety of angles.

Also known as the Maypop, Apricot Vine, or Hardy Passion Vine, the Passionflower can be found along the banks of the Flint River mid-summer through mid-fall. The blooms grow along tendril-bearing vines and produce a fruit that yellows as it ripens. The fruit can be eaten from the vine or used in cooking and canning.

In the Upper Flint alone more than 400,000 residents in Clayton, Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Coweta counties utilize about 30 million gallons per day! Waters of the Flint under daylight for the first time. The source of the Flint is not Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but instead this small stream exiting the Woodward Academy campus several miles north of where the river enters airport property.

Flint Riverkeeper staff have covered the watershed over the last two weeks as part of final orientation for our three new employees, Michaela Collins, Rachel McDaniel, and Kalyn Hansford. Thank you to American Rivers, the Water Policy Center, The Jones Center, Flint River SWCD, Apalachicola Riverkeeper, and the members and donors who all took part in their onboarding and training.

Environmental groups are preparing to sue the city of Atlanta over what they call years of illegal pollution from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport into the Flint River.
