Do you have a story to add?

Have You Ever Heard of “The Sea” on the Pike County/Meriwether County, Georgia line?

Tucked away along the Flint River near the White Oak Creek area, close to Gay, Georgia, is a place known to longtime locals as “The Sea.” The Sea is a wide, circular place on the Flint River, measured to be 35 ft deep. It has “stories.”

It’s one of those fascinating places whose name has been passed down through generations, yet its history and the origin of its unusual name remain something of a mystery.

The Flint River is rich in local history, and places like “The Sea” are part of the heritage we don’t want to lose.

Do you remember “The Sea”? Did you ever swim, fish, picnic, or spend time there? We’d love to hear your memories, old stories, and especially how this special place got its name!

The Clean Water Act (CWA) establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulating quality standards for surface waters. The basis of the CWA was enacted in 1948 and was called the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, but the Act was significantly reorganized and expanded in 1972. The “Clean Water Act” is the foundation for waterkeeper organizations such as Flint Riverkeeper.

Can you spot the alligator? One of our most frequent questions is how often we see gators while in the field. The answer is not very often. Alligators are present throughout the watershed but rarely make themselves known. This little gator was spotted by FRk’s Kalyn Hansford while monitoring water quality near Americus.

On Thursday FRk staff responded to a sewer spill into Sullivan Creek from Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Water samples tested for e.coli were incubated overnight and read Friday.

Too numerous to count (TNTC) means an amount of e.coli bacteria was present that was too high to be monitored. TNTC readings were observed at the fish kill site on Sullivan Creek and in the river downstream of the Sullivan Creek confluence. The state suggested level for safe contact is

Yesterday Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport spilled 33,000 gallons of sewage into a Flint tributary. When our staff reached the scene this morning we found a fish kill and dissolved oxygen levels of .6 (5-6 is normal for time of year).

Fish kill at Radium Springs:

We were saddened to learn from GA DNR, and then confirmed by our staff, that a fish kill has occurred at Radium Springs. GA DNR reports low spring flow and very low levels of dissolved oxygen, a natural consequence of low flow.

Flint Riverkeeper, in cooperation with farmers, resource managers, academicians, and Dougherty Co. officials, is working diligently to restore flow at Radium Springs by minimizing the impact of withdrawals from the Floridan Aquifer during dry periods. The Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District, in particular, has made significant progress with farmers in the Radium Springs spring shed. Since 2022, the District has been using private and federal funds to update irrigation equipment on over 1,800 acres in the spring shed, on average improving the efficiency of the irrigation systems by 35 percent, real water savings realized at the spring has been updated. Pending release of additional federal funds, a project to develop alternative sources of water for agriculture during dry periods will be initiated.

The work would be greatly advanced by industrial users like Proctor and Gamble joining directly in the conservation efforts.
