Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day and honor the diverse cultures, histories and contributions of Indigenous communities.

For many Indigenous people, culture, community, family, connection to land and the wisdom of Elders can play an important role in mental health and well-being. Understanding the impact of history and supporting culturally responsive mental health care are important steps toward a more inclusive mental health system.

NAMI New York State will be closed on Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day. We will resume regular business hours on Tuesday, October 13.

๐ŸŒŽ Today is World Mental Health Day.

Today, we recognize the importance of mental health and the need for communities where everyone feels supported, heard, and able to access the care they need. Itโ€™s also a reminder that support and advocacy can help move us toward a future of mental health for all.

This November, letโ€™s keep the conversation going at NAMI NYS EdCon 2026, November 13โ€“15 in Albany. Join advocates, professionals, and community leaders for three days of learning, connection, meaningful conversations, and advocacy.

Why can we understand what happened to us and still struggle to feel safe?

At EdCon 2026, Dr. Kristen Szabla will lead โ€œFrom Survival Mode to Nervous System Safety: Understanding the Neurobiology of Trauma & Mental Illness Through the Lens of Neuroplasticity.โ€

This engaging, neuroscience-informed session will explore how trauma can reshape the brain and nervous systemโ€”and why responses like hypervigilance, panic, emotional overwhelm, dissociation, and nervous system exhaustion can feel automatic.

Dr. Szabla will connect neuroscience, lived experience, and trauma-informed insight to explore the role of neuroplasticity in healing and recovery, while sharing practical tools for nervous system regulation and psychological safety.

This session is designed to replace shame with understanding and empower participants, families, advocates, and community members with a deeper understanding of how trauma affects the brain and bodyโ€”and how healing is possible.

What if we looked beyond survival and focused on pathways toward healing?

At EdCon 2026, Angelynn Lindor will lead โ€œBeyond Survival: Bridging Trauma, Emotional Intelligence, and Community Healing.โ€

This session will explore how trauma-informed and emotionally intelligent approaches can transform responses to behavioral health challenges, particularly among justice-involved populations and underserved communities.

Participants will explore:

๐Ÿง  How trauma and unprocessed emotions can shape behavioral patterns
๐Ÿ’ญ The role of perception and emotional intelligence
๐Ÿค Culturally responsive approaches centered on dignity and lived experience
๐ŸŒฑ Strategies that support accountability and long-term healing
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Practical tools for emotional regulation and interrupting cycles of harm

Drawing from clinical work in correctional settings and community and international speaking engagements, Angelynn will connect research to real-world strategies that can help create pathways from crisis to care.
