New York State Board of Election staff may not have been able to locate these voters, but the names and addresses correspond to residents in the district and it’s clear these are real voters. Minor spelling differences or abbreviations ought not invalidate signatures from otherwise qualified voters. If a voter's identity can reasonably be determined, New York election law favors counting the signature.

I personally witnessed these individuals sign my petition. The burden ought to be on the objector to prove that these voters do not exist. Disqualifying valid voters based on minor discrepancies risks disenfranchisement. Our history shows us clearly that voter disenfranchisement is a form of voter suppression, and we must be careful not to repeat those inequities.

Currently, there is an interim City Manager running the City of Newburgh. This death occurred in January. The only reason we’re seeing this is because of the independent work of a couple of people and the persistence of grieving parents seeking justice, accountability, and assurance that this won’t happen again. Listen to the words lawyer Michael Sussman says in this video. He’s absolutely correct. The city of Newburgh has a civilian oversight board but it’s not independent. An independent board would have had access to view officer body cam footage in January. Throughout Congressional Districts 16, 17, 18, and 19, we ought to demand independent civilian oversight of law enforcement, at the very least. 4 months later the Burks family deserves the Hudson Valley’s support. While everyone is focused on federal issues, the Dutchess County legislature passes resolutions to stop an ICE facility in Orange County, they’ve demonstrated that they’re willing to overstep the man-made boundaries to do the right thing. So what are we going to do to support the Burks family? How will we protest for accountability, justice, and the right to breathe? Why is it okay for Black men to be killed in America? Why can’t Black human beings get the proper medical attention in New York? Who watches the watchers? What are you going to do now?

Open primaries change who gets to participate in choosing candidates and that has a direct impact on how campaigns gather support and gain ballot access. Open primaries allow any registered voter to participate in a party’s primary election, regardless of their party affiliation. This creates broader Democratic participation by allowing independents, non affiliated party members to help decide who represents a party in the General Election. Independents make up a large portion of the electorate. Continuing to exclude them ought to be viewed as voter suppression. Entrenched incumbents benefit the most from closed primaries. They rely on small party based and low voter turnout. Candidates who appeal to the general public have stronger chances in competing. Open primaries also reflect the full electorate. Ballot access rules are tied closely to party registration, so open primaries would change how candidates gather petition signatures. In New York for example, if you are running in a Democratic primary, only registered Democrats can sign your designating petition. This forces candidates to target party-specific voters when in reality their constituency may not be in their party, may not participate in government, by choice or by law. In an open primary system, there would be a larger pool of signers, similar to running for the School Board. You just have to be a registered voter in the election district. Strategies would shift, allowing for a wider base to be reached. Candidates would have to speak with all voters, build a broader community support, and frame their campaigns around issues rather than party identity. The aim for open primaries is to expand democratic participation and reduce gatekeeping by party structures. Shifting power slightly away from party insiders and to the people. 🟡⚫️⚪️

We asked you to watch the Newburgh Sting (Newburgh 4) before. It’s quite evident that the government uses the same playbook to target disenfranchised and impoverished citizens, to make their “textbook” cases, open and shut. This ruins communities and terrorizes families. Since 2016, during the Trump Administration, we’ve witnessed similar tactics being used. The DHS doesn’t have a massive budget for no reason. Some of us have witnessed this since 9/11. Some since 1948. These imperialistic weapons hurt everyone except for the people in power. This is what radicalized us. Senator Schumer, a former NYS Assemblymember and 45/47, a former Democrat, are two of the most powerful politicians in the world. There are many ways to fight back. Inform yourself, include others, and we need an intersectional approach to impede their tactics against our neighbors. 🟡⚫️⚪️

Joined our good brother Alton Lee for a film screening and panel discussion on the doc The Interview at the Newburgh Library. The Interview asks viewers to confront their feelings about justice and redemption while exposing the New York State Parole Board's unfair practices. We’re asking elected officials to confront their complacency and push prison reform legislation through the New York State Legislature. 🟡⚫️⚪️

Camp Beacon Reimagined Repurposed 🟡⚫️⚪️

As your next NYS District 104 Assemblymember, our office will fight to reimagine & repurpose Camp Beacon, a former incarceration facility. This means transforming 39 acres of stagnancy into a hub for community-driven innovation. According to reporting from the Highlands Current, the 39–acre site with 22 existing buildings has remained untouched since the state shuttered the prison in 2013. This cycle of inactivity has deprived Beacon of a generational opportunity. A site with this scale, existing infrastructure, & community proximity could have already been generating careers, recreation, education, & local economic activity. During a time of skyrocketing housing costs & a lack of youth programming space, Beacon & District 104 at large, have lost opportunities for green infrastructure, indoor/outdoor recreation space, workforce development hubs, small business incubators, & arts & cultural spaces. Our campaign’s vision is a model for Community-First Redevelopment. Camp Beacon must be transformed into a Return on Social Investment (ROSI) engine, one rooted in development without displacement. One that includes mixed-use innovation & commerce. Small business incubators, co-working & entrepreneurship centers, performance arts, & creative economy studios.

The goal isn’t to shame anyone. The goal is to build political spaces that actually reflect the demographic and lived realities of the communities most impacted by policy. That requires shifting who defines strategy, tone, leadership pipelines, and priorities. If your coalition or political party only feels welcoming when people of color assimilate to white norms of communication, professionalism, or political framing, that isn’t inclusion. That’s white-centered control dressed up as diversity. White leadership pipelines and white political framing are not neutral, they are white-centered politics. American political institutions were constructed within a racial hierarchy that deliberately excluded Black and Indigenous people from power, from slavery to Jim Crow laws to modern voter suppression. These structures were build around whiteness and exclusion. If party spaces replicate those dynamics culturally or structurally, that’s not accidental. Are we willing to transform power? 🟡⚫️⚪️

For the record: Congressmember Pat Ryan at the 1/29/26 rally to oppose the construction of an ICE detention facility in the Village of Chester. Hundreds showed up. Listen to his words. It’s our responsibility to ensure our officials stay true to what they say in public and what they put on paper. 🔥🧊
