Today in Underground Railroad History…
On this day in 1844, John W. Jones and four other enslaved men escape from their Virginia plantation, successfully fighting off slave catchers in Maryland along the way. Jones will settle in Elmira, New York, where he operates a key Underground Railroad station between Philadelphia and St. Catharines in Ontario. In 1854, he forges an agreement with Northern Central Railway workers to hide freedom seekers in baggage cars that take them directly to Niagara Falls.
