Students in Kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to join us at VFW Post 584 to create patriotic inspired art to enter into our annual Illustrating America and Patriotic Art contests. Art Supplies, contest entry forms, and snacks will be provided for all artists! All entries into the Illustrating America and Patriotic Art contests become eligible for cash and prizes on a local, state, and national level.

This is a FREE event on Saturday November 7 starting at 10:00 am and ending at 1pm. Children are welcome to stop by anytime during those hours. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

All entries must be accompanied by an application signed by a parent or guardian. While these applications are available at the event, if someone else is bringing your child, please print and sign the application prior to your child attending.

CALL TO ACTION!

Over the past month, veterans and supporters across the country have sent a clear message: expand veterans' benefits without reducing future veterans' earned disability compensation. Through emails, phone calls, trips to Washington, D.C., and meetings with lawmakers, you've made sure veterans' voices are being heard.

Although the House pulled its planned vote on the Take Care of America's Veterans Act (H.R.9237 / S.4744), the bill remains active. Now is not the time to let up. Congress should not correct one injustice by creating a new one for future veterans. As lawmakers determine the path forward, they need to continue to hear that their constituents reject this approach.

The VFW supports correcting past injustices through measures like the Major Richard Star Act, expanding survivor benefits, strengthening mental health protections, and other legislation that honors the sacrifices made by those who served.

Section 108 would create a new injustice. It would take the unprecedented step of reducing future veterans' earned disability compensation to pay for today's benefit expansions. Congress can and should find a better way.

Tell your representative and both senators to oppose Section 108 of the Take Care of America's Veterans Act. Urge them to reject this unprecedented pay-for and protect veterans' earned disability compensation. Sending a message is easy!

🇺🇸 POW/MIA Recognition Day — We Will Never Forget 🇺🇸

Last night, VFW Post 584 and Auxiliary gathered for a small but deeply meaningful ceremony in observance of POW/MIA Recognition Day—a time to honor those who were prisoners of war, those who never returned home, and the families who carried the weight of waiting and wondering.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Commander Draper for his powerful words and for sharing the remarkable story of a POW/MIA bracelet and the journey it took to finally make its way to where it belonged. It was a moving reminder that behind every name engraved on a bracelet, memorial, or monument is a real person, a family, and a story that deserves to be remembered.

We are especially grateful to the Hassenger family for allowing us the privilege of honoring their loved one, Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Arden Keith Hassenger, a native of Lebanon, Oregon.

On Christmas Eve 1965, then-Staff Sergeant Hassenger was serving as a gunner aboard an AC-47D gunship, call sign Spooky 21, when the aircraft was shot down during a mission over Savannakhet Province, Laos. All six members of the crew were lost. Hassenger remained Missing in Action for nearly 47 years and was posthumously promoted to Chief Master Sergeant while listed as missing.
For decades, the promise to bring him home endured. Between 1999 and 2011, joint U.S. and Laotian teams conducted investigations and excavations at the crash site, recovering remains, personal effects, and aircraft wreckage. In March 2012, Chief Master Sgt. Hassenger’s remains were officially identified.

Nearly 47 years after that Christmas Eve mission, he came home.
In June 2012, Chief Master Sgt. Hassenger was returned to Lebanon, Oregon, and laid to rest with full military honors. The following month, the six members of the Spooky 21 crew were honored together with a group burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Last night, a bracelet engraved with Chief Master Sgt Hassenger’s name was returned to his family with a letter from a woman who wore it from the time she was a young girl. It was a beautiful moment as his grandson accepted it, in uniform, on behalf of his family.

Stories like Chief Master Sgt. Hassenger’s are why POW/MIA Recognition Day matters.
It is more than a date on the calendar. It is a promise.

A promise to remember those who endured captivity.
A promise to continue searching for those who remain missing.
A promise to stand beside the families who have waited for answers.
And a promise that no American service member will simply be forgotten with the passing of time.

That promise does not belong to one ceremony or one day each year. It is a promise we must keep every day.
To Chief Master Sgt. Arden Keith Hassenger, the crew of Spooky 21, and all of our nation’s POWs and MIAs:

You are not forgotten.
Your families are not forgotten.
Your sacrifice is not forgotten.

The Auxiliary gifted those in attendance a POW/MIA pin as a small symbol of remembrance. It is our hope that these pins will be worn proudly—not only as a tribute to those who never made it home, but also as a way to keep their stories alive and help others understand the importance of honoring our nation’s POWs and MIAs.

It was pleasure to deliver 15 baskets full of goodies to our local first responders as a way to say thank you for all they do for our communities in honor of Patriot’s Day! We are always looking for volunteers to support our events and projects! Want to join us? Email us at [email protected]!

A big thank you to the representatives from our local VFW who stopped by earlier today with some goodies for the whole office!

They came by to show appreciation for the work we do in the community, and we’re just as grateful they took the time to visit.

The Major Richard Star Act is now one signature away from an important breakthrough in the House of Representatives.
Discharge Petition No. 22 has reached 217 signatures. It needs 218. The petition would help clear a path for the House to consider H.R. 2102, Major Richard Star Act, as a standalone bill.

Thousands of combat-injured veterans have waited long enough for Congress to end the unfair offset that prevents them from receiving both the military retirement pay and VA disability compensation they earned.

They need your help right now.

With the petition just one signature away from 218, every message matters. Call or email your representative today and tell them veterans are counting on their support.

The VFW Post 584 Auxiliary would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Guitars for Veterans for performing at our Memorial Day BBQ today. Your music was absolutely amazing and truly helped make the day special for everyone who attended.

We appreciate the time, talent, and heart you shared with our veterans, families, and community as we gathered to honor and remember those who gave so much for our country. Thank you for helping create such a meaningful and enjoyable Memorial Day celebration!
