Scammers are using fake Medicare card updates to get your personal information. They may claim your card is expiring or that you need a new plastic or chipped card. Don’t give your Medicare number to an unexpected caller. If you’re unsure about a Medicare card request, verify it before you take action.

One of the easiest ways to detect Medicare fraud is by reviewing your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or Explanation of Benefits (EOB).

A quick review each month can help you spot unfamiliar providers or services before fraud goes unnoticed. If you find something you don't recognize, don't ignore it.

As a community, we can all participate in Medicare Fraud Prevention Week by looking out for our older neighbors and community members. For example, when you are out in public, be aware of older people purchasing gift cards in large amounts. If you see this, ask questions or mention gift card scams. Many people have helped stop a scam in its tracks by stepping in and asking questions.
To report potential Medicare fraud, contact the NYS Senior Medicare Patrol at 800-333-4374.
