Your Medicare number is private and valuable. Scammers can use it to commit fraud, steal your medical identity, and bill Medicare for services you never received. Remember: Medicare will not call, text, or email asking for your Medicare number or banking information.

If you see charges for services like Remote Patient Monitoring that you didn’t request or receive, it could be a scam.
✔️ Review your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN)
✔️ Look for unfamiliar services or providers
✔️ Report anything suspicious

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) covers a wide variety of services a provider may offer to help monitor or assess certain chronic conditions. SMPs are hearing about RPM claims appearing on Medicare statements, like the Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) and/or Explanation of Benefits (EOB), where the beneficiary does not believe they received or agreed to the services.

If you see any RPM claims on your Medicare statement that you did not agree to, contact the NYS Senior Medicare Patrol at 800-333-4374.

Have you received a call about qualifying for "free" back, knee or wrist braces or other durable medical equipment (DME) or supplies through Medicare? The SMP can help you with what to do next.
Scam artists are calling Medicare beneficiaries, pretending to work with Medicare or their doctor and stating they qualify for DME. They just need the beneficiary to confirm their Medicare number. They then ship braces and other supplies, sometimes in bulk, to the beneficiary. If you know someone who has Medicare, make sure they know about these DME scams. Contact the NYS at 800-333-4374.

Paper or plastic? Not when it comes to your Medicare card. Offers of a plastic Medicare card are scams. Don't accept these, no matter how good the offers sound. Medicare only offers and approves a paper card.
