Join us this Friday December 5th at 4 PM to celebrate Catherine Blake’s legacy and learn more about her and her husband Adam Blake Jr. at the Blake Annex legacy Market. Adam Blake Jr. was one of Albany’s most successful Black entrepreneurs of the 1800s. Born in 1830 and later adopted by Adam Blake Sr. — a man formerly enslaved on the Van Rensselaer estate — Blake grew up with rare access to education and opportunity for his time.

He got his start in hospitality as a waiter at the Delavan House, eventually working his way up and opening multiple restaurants across the city. By 1865, he was leasing Congress Hall Hotel, and when it was torn down, he used the funds to build The Kenmore — a landmark that would define Albany’s cultural and social scene.

His legacy wasn’t just business — it was Black excellence, ambition, and possibility.

Catherine and Adam Blake were visionary Black entrepreneurs who built spaces of opportunity, beauty, and belonging right here in Albany at a time when the world didn’t always offer it freely. Their work reminds us that legacy is more than a business; it’s a love letter to the generations that follow.

This December, we’re celebrating Catherine Benjamin Blake’s birthday and the legacy she left behind through The Legacy Market — an ancestral, joyful, community celebration at The Blake Annex!

Throughout the year, We Belong All Year Long has collaborated with local Black- and women-owned businesses to host pop-ups that bring creativity, healing, and entrepreneurship together under one roof. Now, we’re expanding that energy with a market that welcomes the entire community to honor and uplift that same spirit.
