Morning Flood Update South Fork, Colorado
Friday, October 23, 2026

The National Weather Service has confirmed that the South Fork of the Rio Grande has crested.

A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT.

MANDATORY EVACUATIONS REMAIN IN EFFECT

Evacuations remain in place for the following areas:

- South Fork of the Rio Grande: From the Wolf Creek Tunnel to Fun Valley and from County Road 20 to the confluence with the Rio Grande River.
- Rio Grande River: From the confluence at the River Green subdivision to the Shaw Creek Rest Area.

Do not return home until the mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted.

Although the river has crested, dangerous conditions remain. Floodwaters may still be present, roads may be damaged, riverbanks may be unstable, and other hazards may exist.

CURRENT ROAD CLOSURES:
- Highway 160 over Wolf Creek Pass.
- Rio Grande County Road 18 Bridge to County Road 15.
Do not drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roadways.

EVACUEE INFORMATION:
Evacuees can go to the South Fork Community Building

Flooding continues for locations along the Rio Grande and Conejos River, with Major flooding ongoing along the South Fork Rio Grande in and around South Fork, CO. High flows along the Rio Grande and other area rivers expected further downstream into the San Luis Valley through the weekend.

Volunteers are needed immediately to assist with sandbagging efforts in South Fork due to flooding.

New Teen Driver Education Requirements Coming to Colorado

Starting January 1, 2027, new driver education standards will go into effect for young drivers across Colorado.

Here’s what parents and teens need to know:

Ages 15–17:
A 30-hour driver education course will be required.

Ages 18–20:
Drivers will need to complete either a 30-hour driver education course or a 4-hour driver awareness program.

Motorcycle riders under 21:
A Colorado State Patrol-approved motorcycle safety course will be required before receiving a motorcycle instruction permit or endorsement.

The current 50 hours of supervised driving requirement for permit holders under 18 will not change.

These changes are intended to give young drivers more education and preparation before getting behind the wheel on their own.

If you have a teen who will be starting the licensing process soon, now is a good time to start planning for these new requirements.
