At Improv Central, we do things differently than other improv theater schools!

Our practice model is split into 3 tracks, and all of our classes will fall into one of these areas. Anyone can take any class, and beginners are welcome at all!

🤝 CONNECTION For anyone wanting real-life fun and authentic community. Think young adults, families, people craving genuine connection beyond screens.

💼 CAREER For professionals who want to communicate, collaborate, and connect more joyfully at work. Practice difficult conversations, build confidence, and develop leadership presence through playful, and very practical, approaches.

We started construction about a month ago and wow, it's been wild!

This space sat empty for 9 years - neighbors walking by, peering through the windows wondering what it would eventually become. Now that we're under construction, those same neighbors are stopping by excitedly, asking what's going on!

New floors going in, bathroom getting a complete overhaul (it looks damn good, folks!), walls getting fresh paint. We wouldn't be here without Joan Howard (.space) and her amazing crew! 💗

We’re slowly building it out and we can’t wait to show you the big reveal when it's done!

Last Friday's Family Frolic was... wow. 🧡

Eighteen of us total - kids ages 3-11 and their parents all playing together. Watching a 4-year-old inspire a grown-up to be braver, while that same grown-up shows their kid it's okay to be silly and mess up? THAT’S what this is all about.

This was family fun time AND it was also kids and their adults learning from each other, being vulnerable together, and trying new things side by side. The kind of night that makes you remember why play actually matters.

Families left saying that it was super special, unique, and something they'd never experienced before. (Same, honestly - I'd never taught a class exactly like this before, but had a hunch it would be something delightful!)

This was just a taste of what's coming when we officially open in September! 🚀 We're in soft launch mode right now, testing out classes and building community before the grand opening. If this is a preview of what family programming will look like, I can't wait! 🤩

What actually is Improv Central? I've been posting about classes and gratitude for my community’s support, but I realize I haven't fully explained what we're even doing here. Let me break it down...
We're Alameda's first community improv space designed for everyday people - not just performers. Think of it as a gym for working the muscles of your most present & playful self!

This isn't about being funny or getting on stage. It's about practicing real-life skills through the playful power of improv. Better conversations? We practice that. Being more present with your kids? We practice that. Communicating confidently at work? We practice that too.

There are no levels to climb, no prerequisites, no performance pressure. Whether you're a parent who wants to enjoy time with your kids instead of just surviving it, a professional who wants to feel more clear and confident as they communicate at work, or someone who just misses feeling spontaneous and connected to community - you belong here.

Our classes are practice sessions for the planned and unplanned moments that matter. The laughter, the joy, the buzzy feeling of being grounded and awake? That just happens naturally when people step into a space that has their backs. We got you.

We're opening this September with our full schedule and programming, but right now we're doing a soft launch - early access classes for our community while we put the finishing touches on the space. Think of it as a sneak peek before the real party starts. Oh, and it WILL. ;)

TODAY: Our very first offering is happening IN THE SPACE before our grand opening in September. Is the space ready?! Nope! But we are!! 🤭✨

We're soft launching, people!!!

That word 'soft' is really resonating with me right now. In a recent yoga class (shout out to the amazing !) the teacher invited us to notice what happened when we chose to 'Unharden. Soften. And accept support.'

Today, I've got that excited-anxious belly feeling that means something momentous and exciting is about to happen in-community with others...something *hopefully* like experiencing a collective unhardening. Softening. And accepting some playful and surprisingly profound support.

Tonight we'll gather in a "structured space for joyous unstructuredness" where a few of us get to practice being more authentically ourselves at work by practicing in a real space together.

If you've been curious about what we're building here — a community space where skill meets soul and you can show up messy and still belong — this is our beautifully imperfect beginning moment.

We're all improvisers. We're all learning. Today. Come unharden with us. Come soften with us. Come accept support. It is SO DAMN FUN.
