Pirates in Paradise

Pirates in Paradise Fundraiser for Alameda Public Schools. The primary objectives are two-fold. First, it is a Fundraiser for the Alameda Education Foundation.

PIRATES IN PARADISE is the second annual “Funraiser” spearheaded by Deborah Wright, a local Farmers Insurance Agent and sculling enthusiast. AEF supports vital programs in our public schools which are desperately needed in light of all the recent cutbacks. Last year we raised over $2500.00! The second purpose of the event is the “Fun-Raiser” piece. Our goal is to raise awareness and hopefully more

participation in all small-boat activities on the Island’s Alameda/Oakland Estuary. These include sculls, crew boats, dragon boats, kayaks, canoes, whaleboats, outriggers, sail boats and stand-ups. My personal vision is to see more kids from Alameda’s middle schools and high schools participate in CREW through Oakland Stokes and/or Jack London Aquatic Center. How about even a Team of our own? How about starting a Crew Club at school? This year’s event promises to draw a huge audience based on its strategic location, The Bridgeside Shopping Center (Nob Hill Grocery). CB Richard Ellis, the Property Managers, and Power Engineering, the dock owners, have graciously allowed us the use of the docks and land space surrounding the shopping area. Bridgeside Shopping Center lends itself as a perfect venue for the Regatta featuring a Bridge to Bridge race between the Alameda Fire Dept and the Alameda Police Dept in the Battle of the Paddle. Last year the AFD won so you know this promises to be an exciting event for either the AFD to maintain their bragging rights or the APD to come out winners in this year’s event. Either way, it’s a ton of fun! This year we want to have more teams competing against one another in a variety of boats. The land area is optimal for vendor booths. The shopping area offers ample parking space along with local businesses available to provide food and beverages to the spectators and participants.
