The 12th Annual American Cancer Society’s East Bay Gala in October will raise awareness and funds to address the cancer screening crisis, health equity and restoring cancer research funding. When the quality of health care differs between people based on their income, race/ethnicity, gender, age, or where they live, it’s called health disparity. Health disparities can affect every step of cancer c
are — from prevention and screening to the quality of life after cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society (ACS) believes everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer. That belief guides the ACS to conduct and support research to help understand cancer inequalities and create strategies for overcoming them. At the American Cancer Society, we are working to advance health equity through a multifaceted approach that includes:
• Strengthening our organizational commitment and capacity to advance health equity and address social determinants of health that create cancer related health disparities
• Engaging multiple sectors and collaborators so we can work together to identify and develop solutions that improve access to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment resources at the national, state, and local levels
• Establishing and nurturing mutually beneficial relationships with communities so we can explore, identify, and implement community driven solutions to address the social determinants of health and ultimately help build healthy, thriving communities
• Sharing our lessons along the way so other organizations that are also on their health equity journey can learn from our successes and challenges for generations to come
Since 2010, ACS East Bay Gala has helped American Cancer Society raise $2 million dollars towards the ongoing pursuit of a cure for cancer. And we continue to support them in the following ways:
• 95 grants totaling more than $50 million are being funded in California
• 13,914 Rides to and from Treatment provided in 2019 in Northern Nevada Northern California
• 3,000 Nights provided in 2019 in Northern Nevada Northern California
• Helped to enact strong state and local smoke-free laws that protect workers and the public from the dangers of secondhand smoke
• Found the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer
Join the fight and help us continue to make a difference.
