Alameda Food Bank

Alameda Food Bank Helping those within the Alameda Community who are experiencing food insecurity since 1977.

The Food Bank was founded in 1977 by a group of concerned local citizens who saw the need in the community for a source of free food for those in need. Originally the Food Bank operated out of a closet in the back room of a church. Two or three volunteers served an average of 35 individual recipients per month during the few years that the Food Bank closet was open. As word of the Food Bank’s serv

ices spread within the community, the number of recipients and volunteers steadily increased. Open six days a week, the Food Bank’s 150+ volunteers serve over 5,600 individual recipients from the Food Bank’s 2,200-square-foot main distribution center (land donated by the City of Alameda) and its 10,000-square-foot warehouse. The community’s wide-spread acceptance and support of the Food Bank’s mission is evident in the continuing and generous donations we receive and the commitment of community volunteers. Though started on a shoestring, the Food Bank has become one of Alameda’s primary social service organizations.

Over the next 10 years changes to SNAP will kick more and more families off the program, require those still eligible to jump through more hoops to qualify, and move costs to the states. It's a slow erosion of a program than helps more than 40 million people in the U.S. and comes at a time when costs continue to rise while wages do not.

When school is out for the summer, many families lose access to school meals.

Thank you to our partners at Ruby Bridges Elementary for helping make our June 30 outreach event such a success! We had the opportunity to connect with over 20 families. For many, it was their very first introduction to Alameda Food Bank and our Island Community Market.
