LGBTQ+ youth make up 34% of all youth in foster care. This Pride Month, we’re recognizing and celebrating LGBTQ+ children and youth in foster care - and how acceptance can change their lives.

Through Family Builders’ Youth Acceptance Project (YAP), Family Builders works directly with families to help them better support their LGBTQ+ children in or at risk of foster care and strengthen family relationships. Every young person deserves to grow up feeling safe, valued, and accepted for who they are, and YAP helps families become the affirming, supportive adults their children need.

A month ago, we came together to celebrate 50 years of Family Builders—and we’re still grateful for the generosity, energy, and community that filled the room that night.

The evening was a reminder of what’s possible when people come together around the belief that every child and youth in foster care deserves a permanent family.

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month, a time to recognize the children and youth in foster care who deserve stability, care, and the chance to grow up in a family that will stand by them for life.

It’s also a time to honor the foster, adoptive, kinship, and biological families, social workers, and advocates who show up every day with patience, commitment, and heart.

TIME just released its 2026 TIME100 list, recognizing the leaders, advocates, and innovators shaping our world today.

Family Builders has partnered with the National Center for LGBTQ Rights for decades, and we’re proud to see their Legal Director, Shannon Minter, named to this year’s list.

Under his leadership, NCLR has taken on multiple legal challenges to anti-LGBTQ policies, continuing a decades-long commitment to advancing equity and protecting fundamental rights.

With 34% of youth in foster care identifying as LGBTQ+, this work matters deeply to the young people and families we serve. Shannon’s leadership helps create a world where they can live with safety, dignity, and support—and where every young person has the chance to build lasting, affirming relationships.
