"Building North Akron’s Future: A New North High School for a Growing Community"

North Akron is experiencing significant growth, emerging as the fastest-growing area in the City of Akron. This surge in population demands investment in the community's future, particularly in the form of education. The Akron School Board has recognized this need. The bond issue will be on the November ballot to fund the construction of a new North High School and cover essential daily expenses. This investment is not only necessary—it’s overdue.
The proposed $85 million North High School will replace the outdated building, parts of which date back to 1931, including a leaky roof and a failing HVAC system. In addition to these aging infrastructure issues, the school is grappling with overcrowded classrooms, exacerbated by the area's growing population. The North Hill community deserves a modern, state-of-the-art facility to match the vibrancy and growth of the neighborhood. Building a new school is about addressing current needs and keeping the promise made to the community to support North Akron’s future.
The Akron Public Schools district has been fiscally responsible, going 12 years without a levy on the ballot. However, inflation, state funding changes, and rising technology costs have left the district facing financial strain. Without new funding, the district predicts budget deficits as soon as 2025, forcing drastic cuts to staff and student programs and affecting the quality of education and services. The levy is crucial for building a new North High School and maintaining operations across the district.
This levy and bond issue would cost property owners just $3.63 per month for the new high school and $22 per month for school operating costs, based on the assessed value of a $100,000 home. These funds would go toward constructing a new school for North Akron and generate $27 million annually to sustain essential programs and operations throughout the district.
North Akron is on the rise, and it is time to invest in its future. A new North High School would provide a safe, modern learning environment, preparing students for success in higher education, the workforce, or the military. This investment in education is also an investment in the community’s economic future, ensuring that North Akron continues to grow and thrive.
Voters can support this vision by passing Issue 27 on November 5. Let’s come together to ensure that North Akron’s growing population receives the educational resources it deserves. The time to act is now for our students, community, and future.
