Where local talent can be regularly presented, observed and appreciated while bringing life to Akron landmarks, rich with history.

Growing up on 9th Street, my sister and I spent unsupervised summer days exploring our neighborhood. Long walks to Reem's Convenience Store, leaving with pockets full of bubblegum and candy, and bike rides to Kenmore High School football stadium filled the sunny hours. We thought we knew our territory. But it wasn't until Elise was a junior at the University of Akron that she discovered Chestnut Ridge, complete with a beautiful stone amphitheater built during the Depression and rarely used since. Her photographer's eye was drawn to the palpable history and serene isolation of this gem she found so close to our childhood home; the actor in me envisioned local performers taking the stage. Shortly after this idea blossomed, we mentioned our rather lofty goals to our Grandma over lunch. She informed us that another such WPA project stood just around the corner from where we were enjoying our Chinese food in Highland Square. After visiting Waters Park, we decided that these monuments could no longer go unused.

Last night, we witnessed a conversation hosted by , , and between .cargle, LuSter Singleton, and about “Queerness in Art and the Midwest.”

Our favorite part was when LuSter recalled his great grandmother’s definition of “q***r,” something so interesting you need to look at it closer. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. 🔍

As someone responsible for saving one of the few le***an bars left in the country, he reminded us of how important q***r nightlife is to the creation of art, a point so studiously made by at the last year in honor of the Andy Warhol exhibit. Long live the gay bar (swipe for some of our faves)!

Hi uh I love and respect these three people so much; I just... think they're truly good and want to use theatre to ask important questions and come up with possible answers. I'm honored to collaborate with them on shows about addiction and defining "home," I'm proud to sit in on pieces about international generational trauma and Black joy, and I'm so grateful for the trust to create with my q***r community, even as I am learning and fu***ng up. I'm really excited about the ways that CATAC can better serve artists and neighbors, ethically and accessibly, from acquiring subtitling screens for multilingual audiences to hosting conversations about trauma-informed performance practices, as well as opening up the space for non-theatre communal activities.

Perfect weekend.
On Friday, I got to see ’s HOME exhibit at with . Such a cool presentation documenting the process, please check it out! And then I got to see ’s album release party at - the show was perfectly executed, the album is incredible, and the opener was a revelation - and Kenmore Blvd is killing it; the Rialto has upgraded since the last time I was there and the late night restaurant next door, Night Owl, was so welcome.
Saturday was .
And yesterday was ’s kick-off campaign party, who is running for Akron City Council At-Large. An actual progressive. The event was beautiful with wonderful volunteers, sustainably-sourced merch, donated food and handwashed dishes. Wearing my shirt today.
