“Today, at approximately 2pm, there was an incident at the City of Akron’s Water Plant located in Franklin Township, Portage County at 1570 Ravenna Rd. which caused a chemical reaction. A delivery of the chemical alum was mistakenly added to two tanks of sodium hypochlorite commonly known as bleach. The mixture created a chemical reaction which resulted in the production of chlorine gas. As a result, three individuals at the plant including two City of Akron Water Plant employees and the driver of the truck delivering alum were directly impacted and have been transported to the hospital. Out of an abundance of caution the Portage County Hazardous Materials Team issued a shelter in place for residents and businesses within a half mile radius of the plant.

The Water Plant has been evacuated and temporarily shut down. Akron Fire including the HAZMAT team, Kent Fire, Portage County HAZMAT, and other first responders are working to clear the gas from the plant and ensure it is safe to reopen and reactivate.

The water currently circulating in Akron’s water distribution system was NOT impacted by the reaction and remains safe to consume.

Akron will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.“

Did you know that May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month? Well... now you do! And here's some important information about asthma in Akron.
As you may know, Big Love has taken initiatives to conduct a comprehensive health assessment. Recently Summit County’s Health Department removed the map features from their website, hindering the active development of updating this project. We have been working on surveying health disparities in East Akron at our events and will continue to fight for ways to document the impact of the plastics industry on Akron’s residents.
