The new year is best celebrated with new friends. During the Lunar New Year celebration at Jin Huo, 19 seniors from the Cleveland St Clair Senior Apartment joined us to welcome the Year of the Horse. Together, we enjoyed chair yoga and exercise, a fashion contest, prize drawings, and a delicious lunch, making it a joyful and memorable day for all.

We are grateful for the support of the GAR Foundation in uplifting our seniors!

We are excited to announce the recent $837,250 awarded in capital grants to 30 organizations across Greater Akron, supporting projects that expand access to essential services and foster economic and cultural vitality. Most grants supported projects that are near the fundraising “finish line,” with GAR’s funding enabling the project to move forward to implementation.

“These investments ensure that organizations have what they need to achieve their mission-critical objectives,” said Christine Amer Mayer, president of GAR Foundation. “From parks and theaters to housing and health services, these projects strengthen the physical spaces that bring people together and improve quality of life in Greater Akron.”

The seniors from Jin Huo Community collected over $800 to donate to to America , a local non-profit organization that will bring disaster relief to communities affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. Many of these seniors, all of whom come from immigrant or refugee backgrounds, were eager for the opportunity to give to those in need. They understand the trauma of losing their home and community and came together to give back.

Thank you to Hands to America for bringing the donations to communities in crisis!
