Here is an announcement from Lew Battaglia on behalf of the 65+ NEO Roy Hobbs Thursday Afternoon League:

We are revamping the Thursday 65's Roy Hobbs league to increase to 4 teams, 2 each of which will be managed by the Brewers and Mudhens organizations, respectively. Part of this process will include re-drafting all returning players to fix the current competitive imbalance between teams.

We are asking all returning and new players to attend one of two pre-draft workouts scheduled at Pinnacle Sports (313 Medina Rd. in Medina, 44256) from Noon to 2 PM on Thursday April 2nd. or Noon to 2 PM Thursday April 9th, the cost of which will be $10 at the door. The facility also requires those who have never practiced there before to sign an accident waiver which can be completed on arrival. Please respond by return message to indicate which of these sessions you plan to attend. Team managers will hold the draft once the 2nd session is completed.

The success of this expansion hinges on attracting new players. League Managers are exploring several recruiting options, but returning players can help by simply spreading the word. The league is convenient to play in, considering that it doesn't conflict with MSBL leagues on Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays' GCAB league. This is truly another opportunity for the baseball junkies among us to get a few extra swings in while making new friends. To facilitate this growth, teams will this year also be able to add anyone who will be at least 63 at anytime during 2026, so please let your younger friends know who would qualify for this exemption.

League Details

18+ Greater Akron AA Division: Younger adults ikn their prime competing from Memorial Day weekend through July, with playoffs ending by mid_August. 7-inning double-headers on weekends with a single game on a weekday evening.

30+ Choose-Up Division: Meet at a local field on Sunday mornings, beginning in May, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. A great place to start if you've been out of the game for a while.

30+ Alumni Division: Core groups of players from local high schools supplemented by friends and free agents. One game per week-end from May through July/August.

45+ Masters Division: 14 or15 game Sunday schedule from Early May through early August, followed by playoffs.

65+ Vintage Division: 12 game schedule at noon on Thursdays from mid-May through mid-August, followed by playoffs. Especially looking for an additional team or sufficient free agents to form one to round out our schedule.

70+ Timeless Division: 12 Game schedule on Saturday mornings from mid-May through early August, followed by playoffs. Up to 3 underage players per team at least 67 years old. Especially looking for an additional team or sufficient free agents to form one to round out our schedule.

Fellow Baseball Junkies,

The genesis of our league (NEO Roy Hobbs Baseball) was in the late 1980s when a group of Akron area baseball enthusiasts formed a weekly pick-up game on local fields. They organized into an over-30 league 1989 and the rest is history.

Now, our league has a thriving 18 & Over presence with a fairly strong presence in 65+ and 70+ ages as well. However, some of us believe strongly there is a cadre of guys in our original demographic - Over 30 - waiting for an opportunity to return to the game they love, albeit they may not quite realize it yet.

We want to remedy that oversight! We are envisioning a weekly schedule in a relaxed format tailored to guys whose family and job responsibilities are pushing them away from playing multiple games per week.

Please help us assess the need for additional recreational baseball opportunities in Summit and surrounding counties!

We plan to invite all Free Agents to our annual tryouts in early April, but we are more than happy to schedule additional pre-season get-togethers as needed.

Our new 70+ division is scheduled to begin Saturday, May 18, with two teams facing off: The Kenmore Eastern Brewers and the Kent Mudhens. 2024 FREE AGENT DRAFT AND WORKOUT:

On April 14th, 2024, NEO Roy Hobbs Baseball will be conducting the 3rd annual Free Agent Pool workout and evaluations for the 2024 Spring/Summer seasons.

This workout is free for all players. For this workout players will be asked to take some batting practice, infield, outfield, or both. Pitchers will throw a small bullpen.

Workout will be held at Hudson High School Ballpark, from 11:00am - 2:00pm. This is a turf field so please wear turf shoes or molded cleats. NO METAL CLEATS are allowed. Also, no gum, seed, to***co or colored drinks are allowed on the field.

Once these workouts have finished all Hobbs managers in attendance will conduct a draft. Players will be contacted, by the managers, after the draft about their new team.
Player fees will be communicated to the draft picks by the persent representatives of each team as they may differ in total.

If you plan to attend, you will need to complete a NEORH Free Agent Workout and Draft Form for 2024. Link is also available under the Register Online section of the website. Please respond by filling out the form to let us know if you plan to attend.

Several of us are kicking around the idea of forming a 70+ league in NEO Roy Hobbs. It would be kinda a natural for some of us “elders”. Probably including in a few players up to 3 years younger and grandfathering them out.

Considering the multiple leagues many of us are playing in for 65+ and 70+, we are sensitive to eliminating scheduling conflicts and minimizing back-to-back dates as well. Our best guess is that it would make the most sense to play on Saturdays and/or Sundays, although we are open to being creative about weekday possibilities.

I would appreciate hearing back from you with your thoughts and suggestions.
