Akron-AAUP Akron-AAUP: The American Association of University Professors at The University of Akron

The Akron chapter of the AAUP has been an advocate for faculty on the campus of The University of Akron for many years. On March 12, 2003 faculty voted overwhelmingly in favor of making the chapter their sole collective bargaining representative. In December of 2005 a near-unanimous vote by 93% of eligible faculty approved our first collective bargaining agreement. A Fair Share referendum was appr

oved in March 2006 with a 70% vote in favor, one of the largest margins of approval in the history of academic labor. Akron-AAUP is currently preparing for negotiation of our fourth collective bargaining agreement.

REJECT HB 698
Tell Ohio's Politicians To Stop Attacking Higher Education!

Ohio's public colleges and universities are under attack--AGAIN-- and the people who will pay the price are students, workers, and communities across the state.

House Bill 698 doubles down on a troubling pattern of legislation designed to politicize higher education, single out employees, and erode the academic freedom that makes our institutions worth attending. If you believe Ohio's future depends on strong, independent public universities—free from political interference—we urge you to add your name to this petition and call on the Ohio General Assembly to reject HB 698.

You probably heard this one, too. No, academic freedom is not brainwashing. It's the exact opposite. But that doesn't make a good soundbite.

Academic freedom isn't telling you what to think--it's asking you to think and then to share those ideas. Academic freedom allows there to be an open exchange of ideas, encourages diverse perspectives, and comes to life through discussion and debate. Academic freedom empowers individuals to form their own opinions based on research and evidence rather than other people's imposed beliefs. That's good, right?

Well, you should know that Ohio's politicians passed an awful piece of legislation--Senate Bill 1--that destroys academic freedom. Politicians, not top subject matter experts, are now determining what can and can't be taught in college classrooms. The new law imposes politicians' beliefs on Ohio students. Now that sounds a lot like brainwashing...

OCTOBER 18: NO KINGS!

Join the AAUP and other allied organizations across the nation for a day of peaceful protest as we come together to make clear: America has no kings, and the power belongs to the people!

We encourage all AAUP members and concerned citizens to join the NO KINGS protest on Saturday, October 18. Actions are organized locally, and you can find details about an event near you here: https://www.nokings.org/

This day of action is an opportunity to unite with organizations and unions across sectors in a collective refusal of Trump’s authoritarianism. Together, by taking to the streets in peaceful protest, it becomes possible to impede the onslaught on our institutions and to offer alternative, positive visions of the future of higher education and our society.
