Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University, the Sorority is currently a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educa

ted women. This including over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Toyko and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization's Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Educational Development, Political Awareness and Involvement, and International Awareness and Involvement. The Akron Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Zeta Alpha Chapter International Awareness and Involvement Committees successfully hosted the impactful “Let’s Talk About Sex” event at the University of Akron Student Union theatre.
In collaboration with community partners including Akron AIDS Collaborative, Gilead Sciences, Equitas Health, and Avita Pharmacy the program provided attendees with a wealth of knowledge centered on HIV awareness, STI/STD education, the importance of knowing one’s status, and practicing safe and informed s*xual health behaviors.
Guest speakers Taba Aleem, Samyell Terry, and Tamara Staley delivered engaging and informative presentations, thoughtfully addressing a wide range of questions from the student body and fostering an open, educational dialogue.
Akron Alumnae awarded "10" gift cards of $20 each to scholars who answered the questions correctly post the event.
Attendees not only gained critical, life-enhancing information but also left with lunch, curated swag bags, and essential safe-s*x resources reinforcing the committees’ commitment to holistic community engagement and health empowerment. The UA scholars asked if this event can be repeated in the near future to further enhance "safe s*x practices".

Your commitment to service continues to shine brightly across our communities.
Our Sorors were proudly represented at several distinguished events, including the Women’s Endowment Dinner hosted by the Akron Community Foundation, where Soror Bernette Williams received the prestigious Judith A. Read Tribute Award.
At the Summit County Historical Society, Soror Khatonia Ford was honored as the Summit County wide Woman of the Year / "Woman to Watch". The Harold K. Stubbs Award celebration also showcased excellence, with awardees Sorors Towanda Mullins and Reniece Tatum-Williams, while recognizing community leaders and awarding scholarships to "10" deserving youth. Both Mullins and Tatum-Williams go over and beyond serving our community in various ways. A special thank you to Dr. Carla Jackson for serving as a polished and engaging emcee.

What an impactful afternoon with our Akron Alumnae Chapter Economic Development Lunch & Learn! 🍽️💵
In partnership with Eudora Graffaree-Robinson Insurance Agency, McGee Consultants, and Rhoden Memorial Funeral Home, community members gathered for an informative discussion on the importance of Life Insurance, Burial Insurance, and Grief Recovery. The room was filled to capacity with residents whose questions were answered in real time.
Special thanks to our thought leaders Eudora Graffaree Robinson, Terea Rhoden, and Victoria McGee for sharing their expertise and empowering our community through financial literacy and legacy planning.

Guests also enjoyed a catered brunch, live music, swag bags, free giveaways, and valuable resources to help families protect and carry on their legacies.

On Saturday, February 28, 2026, the Akron Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. proudly sponsored its 42nd Les Belles Perles Cotillion, celebrating 14 outstanding Debutantes from across the community.
The elegant evening honored young women who excel academically, demonstrate exceptional leadership, and are deeply committed to community service. Through this year’s program, the Chapter awarded $20,000 in scholarships to support their continued educational pursuits. Additionally, the 14 distinguished escorts were presented with love tokens in recognition of their dedication and commitment throughout the Cotillion experience.
The Les Belles Perles Cotillion is more than a formal presentation; it is a transformative enrichment program. Participants engage in leadership development and Arts & Culture programming, guided by respected leaders from across the Akron community.

Towanda Mullins, President of the Akron Alumnae Chapter, delivered a heartfelt tribute to the scholars and highlighted remarkable achievements among the 2026 Debutantes:
• Five Debutantes will graduate high school with an Associate’s Degree
• GPA averages ranged from 3.0 to 4.6
• Each Debutante completed 200+ community service hours
Since its inception, the Chapter has proudly presented more than 700 Debutantes and awarded over $600,000 in scholarship dollars, continuing its longstanding commitment to scholarship, service, and sisterhood.

The Presenter for the evening was Mr. Brian Turner a retired Principal from Akron Public Schools.
