Let's go Guardians! āš¾ļø

Fun fact: this work from Lee Friedlander is part of ten works the Museum has loaned to the Smithsonian American Art Museum for their exhibition, "Much Here Is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial."

The exhibitions offer an expansive and evocative portrait of America in the 1970s and early 1980s. Explore selected images from photography surveys that document people and places in the United States from the 19th century to the years before and after the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976.

Friedlander's work will be on view through April 18, 2027.

Senior Curator Dr. Jeff Katzin visited the Middlebury College Museum of Art, which recently opened Michelangelo Lovelace: Art Saved My Life. The exhibition, which debuted at the Akron Art Museum in 2024, is the first retrospective exhibition to survey the full span of Lovelace's long, prolific, and remarkable career.

During his visit, Katzin shared insights gained from his experience curating the exhibition Michelangelo Lovelace: Art Saved My Life, alongside stories about Lovelace’s intensely dedicated fusion of art and life, his simplified but powerful style, and Lovelace's resonant approaches to politics and Black identity.

Michelangelo Lovelace: Art Saved My Life is on view at the Middlebury College Museum of Art through January 10, 2027.

We are saddened to share that Artist Paul Stankard has passed away at the age of 83.

Paul Stankard’s glass paperweights and sculptures celebrate the natural world in miniature. Suspended in the stillness of clear glass are blossoms and leaves, roots and insects—so perfectly detailed, so accurate, so sensual and lush—that it is difficult to believe they are not real.

The Museum sends condolences to his family and honors Stankard’s contributions to contemporary art. We are quite fortunate to have Paul Stankard's works in our collection.
