The ABCs of Trees are getting a little refresh! 🌳

We’re starting our alphabet all over again, but this time, we’re exploring different types of trees! 🌱

By educating our community today, we’re helping inspire the next generation of tree stewards who will care for, protect, and benefit from these incredible trees for years to come.

And the best part? These are all trees you can find right here in our city!

🌳 This week’s letter is D for Dogwood Tree! Dog wood trees are a beautiful addition to any landscape, offering year-round interest and benefits for local wildlife. These deciduous trees burst into bloom with stunning ornamental spring flowers, bringing color to the landscape after winter.

In the fall, their bird-friendly berries provide an important food source for wildlife, making dogwoods both beautiful and beneficial to the environment.

A huge thank you to Barberton Tree Service Inc. for taking us through the whole alphabet of trees again in such a fun and engaging way! We’re so grateful for your continued partnership and collaboration as we work together to keep Akron clean, green, and beautiful.

The ABCs of Trees are getting a little refresh! 🌳

We’re starting our alphabet all over again, but this time, we’re exploring different types of trees! 🌱

🌳 This week’s letter is C for Catalpa Tree! Catalpa trees are also known as catawba, cigar trees, Indian bean trees, and caterpillar trees. They’re easy to spot thanks to their enormous, heart-shaped leaves, beautiful clusters of white flowers, and long, bean-like seed pods.

One especially fun feature of the catalpa is the catalpa worm, the caterpillar of the catalpa sphinx moth. These caterpillars are actually sought after by fishermen as a popular fishing bait! 🎣

Daffodil planting season is in the air, and we couldn’t be more excited! 🌼

Since 2021, Keep Akron Beautiful has been bringing a little extra springtime joy to Akron through our Daffodil Tour. Each fall, we plant thousands of daffodil bulbs throughout gardens across the city, creating beautiful bursts of color for our community to enjoy when spring arrives.

With multiple gardens featuring different colors and varieties of daffodils, the Daffodil Tour is a wonderful way to get outside, explore our city, and enjoy one of the earliest signs of spring.

And there are so many reasons we love daffodils! They symbolize joy, renewal, peace, hope, and healing. They are sturdy, reliable, and pest-resistant, meaning deer and chipmunks tend to leave them alone. Even better, daffodils return year after year, and some varieties naturalize and multiply over time. They also provide an important early-season food source for pollinators, especially our hardworking bees!

Last year, KAB planted approximately 29,850 daffodil bulbs throughout Akron, and we’re already looking forward to more being planted this year. We can’t wait to see our gardens filled with daffodils again this spring. Daffodil season is coming!
