🧱 For more than a hundred and fifty years there was a stone fortress sitting on Spring Street in downtown Columbus, and most people driving through the arena district today have no idea it was ever there.

The Ohio Penitentiary opened in 1834 and grew into one of the most overcrowded prisons in the country, at its worst holding several thousand men in a building designed for a fraction of that. In April of 1930 a fire broke out in wooden scaffolding near a cell block while men were still locked in. More than three hundred prisoners died. It remains one of the deadliest prison disasters in American history, and it forced a national argument about how prisons were built and run.

The Pen closed in 1984 and sat empty and vandalized for years before it was finally demolished in 1998. The land is arenas, apartments and parking now. A few salvaged stones and a historical marker are about all that is left of a place that shaped how this state thought about punishment for a century and a half. 🕯️

The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield looks more like a castle than a prison, and that's exactly what makes it so unsettling. 🏰 Built in the 1880s and operating until 1990, it once held thousands of inmates behind its gothic sandstone walls.

Conditions inside were harsh for most of its history, especially in the overcrowded East Cell Block, which for a long time held the record for the largest free-standing steel cell block in the world. After it closed, stories started circulating about strange sounds and cold spots in certain wings, and the building has since become one of the most visited reportedly haunted sites in the country.

Whether or not you believe in any of that, standing in front of those barred windows at dusk is enough to make the hair on your arms stand up. Some buildings just carry weight, and this one carries more than most. 🌫️

🕰️ This massive Gothic building was once one of the largest mental asylums in the country, and it's still standing in Athens, Ohio.

The Ridges, formerly the Athens Lunatic Asylum, operated for over a century, and its imposing Kirkbride-style architecture has made it one of the most recognizable, and eerie, buildings in the entire state. The site has a long and complicated history, and today parts of the building have been repurposed while other sections remain closed off, adding to its reputation as one of Ohio's most legendary haunted locations.

Whether you're drawn to the history or the ghost stories, there's no denying the Ridges has an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Ohio.

There's a block in downtown Youngstown where you can still make out the ghost of a hardware store sign if the afternoon light hits the brick just right. 🏚️

Youngstown was built on steel, and for most of the 20th century blocks like this one were full, storefronts humming with regulars, sidewalks busy before and after shift changes at the mills. When the steel industry collapsed in the late 1970s, it took a huge piece of the city's daily rhythm with it, and a lot of these buildings have sat quiet ever since.

What gets me is that the bones are still beautiful. The stone lintels, the cast iron window frames, all of it still standing, just waiting for the block to fill back in. 🧡

Road trips used to mean a map folded in the glove box and a few odd surprises along the way. In Ohio, one of those surprises is how many castle-like spots are tucked into the landscape, waiting where you least expect them.

Turrets, stone walls, steep roofs, and old-world details give these places a real fairytale feel without leaving the state. Some look like grand estates, others feel more like a storybook hideaway, but they all make you slow down and stare for a minute.

I like that this kind of drive still exists. It makes a Saturday feel a little larger than usual, and a lot more interesting. 👇👇

Franklin Castle has stood in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood since 1881, and for over a century, it's carried a reputation that refuses to fade. Stories of hidden passageways, mysterious deaths in the family that built it, and strange sounds echoing through empty halls have turned this Victorian mansion into a magnet for ghost hunters and curious locals alike. Some say a child's cries can still be heard on quiet nights.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there's something undeniably eerie about a house this beautiful holding this many secrets. It's one of those Ohio landmarks that feels like it belongs in a movie, except it's real, and it's still standing right here in our own backyard.
