Myth: Affordable housing is easy to get if you qualify.

Fact: Demand for affordable housing far exceeds supply. Even qualified applicants often wait years for a unit to open up. The shortage is not a matter of applications. It is a matter of units.

That is why local developers like EANDC continue to build, rehabilitate, and preserve units in our community.

Thank you to Judi Hill, The President of the Akron NAACP, Beth Vild, The Chief of Operations of The Big Love Network, and Tara L. Mosley for your continued support. A special thank you to the volunteers that came out to w**d, plant flowers, and clean up in the community. Myth: Akron is affordable enough already.

Fact: Akron remains more affordable than many U.S. cities, but local wages have not kept pace with local rents. The result is a real and growing affordability gap that shows up in working households, not just in households experiencing crisis.

The average one-bedroom apartment in Akron now rents for roughly $868 per month. To afford that without becoming cost-burdened, a household needs an annual income of about $34,700.

The average Akron resident earns less than $32,000 per year. Across Summit County, nearly half of renter households spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing, and a meaningful share spend more than 50 percent.

June is National Homeownership Month! A time to recognize the importance of owning a home and to provide the education for first-time homebuyers and current homeowners.

Our Center for Homeownership team held a great Intro to Homebuying Class for NeighborWorks Weeks. Members of the community had the chance to listen to our financial literacy counselor speak with a recent homebuyer about her experience purchasing a home. Then our Center for Homeownership manager had a discussion with Dr. Yvette Lester, LPCC about the mental blocks to homeownership and how to overcome them.

Our Center for Homeownership team can help you with shifting your mental block to becoming a homeowner. Contact us today!
