Leann, THANK YOU for all you have done for your foster families! You will be so very missed by so many people!

Today we say farewell to Leann Benitez, Foster Home Coordinator, who is retiring from Summit County Children Services (SCCS) after 31 years in child welfare. Leann began her work at SCCS on July 22, 1996. She has worked in several capacities throughout the agency, but has spent the majority of her years in the Placement Services Department. Leann has worked hard on behalf of children in our community for their safety, permanency and well-being.

When asked about her journey with SCCS, Leann shared the following, “Child welfare isn’t easy and I would never have made it to this point without the support of an amazing group of friends and co-workers. I have especially enjoyed working with the foster parents of SCCS and being witness to the hard work they put in every day, all day. Watching them grow and develop as parents, and welcome children into their families, sometimes outside of their comfort zone due to challenges, has been rewarding. They are the true heroes’ in this field.”

Please join us in wishing Leann a heartfelt congratulations on her retirement.

“Child abuse reporting fell during the pandemic, but not, experts suspect, because abuse rates fell. Why? Teachers and other school personnel alone make about a third of all child abuse reports: the largest number of any single job category. With the vast majority of children back to in-person learning this fall, experts are watching the signs to see where kids stand after a year of unreliable data.”

Family welfare experts for months have looked to the easing of coronavirus pandemic restrictions as the turning point that would bring clarity about child abuse and neglect rates after a year of unreliable data.
